My V6 is enough power for me. History proves it....

Boy do we get spoiled! It is fun to look back at the horsepower ratings of the previous JGC generations. Our 2014+ V6 power is increased by some 35% more than our V6 from 2010 (WK). Not to even mention nearly 50% horsepower increase from the original 4.0L (ZJ).

Some charts from Wiki to showcase the HP increase:

And twice as many gears as a ZJ to deliver it.

I was plenty happy with my two 4.0L I6's (not V6's) 2002 GC and 1994 GC.

Fantastic motor and I towed 4500lbs with it. Went 217K and it only burned a quart every 5000 miles before I sold it.

Removed V6 since it was added by mistake. I do agree with how tuff the 4.0L was. I was running it in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee for many many miles!

Horsepower isn't everything, torque numbers are important too.

My '95 2.5L 4cyl engine puts out more HP than the '87-'90 4.2L I-6 engine, but the I-6 was a powerhouse in the torque department.

Re: My V6 is enough power for me. History proves it....

Our first Jeep was a '91 Cherokee Sport with the 4.0 I6. What a great engine! We put almost 100K on it before giving it to my dad, who added another 150K. Rock solid reliability.

Agreed horsepower doesn't mean anything. Look at the torque and the RPM at which those numbers are created.

But the WK2 gained a lot of weight over those old versions.

So this thread is to make specific engine owners feel good about their decision?!?

I understand if you some folks feel the need to justify or validate your purchase decision (v6, V8, or Diesel). Jeep offers different engine for different needs and wants.

Buy whichever you want, can afford, and feel good about.

Maybe I should have titled the thread differently. To me it shows the engineering and effectiveness of gaining in horsepower/torque over the years. I do agree a person must weight their own needs for engine, mine needs justified the V6.

Re: My V6 is enough power for me. History proves it....

I also found this interesting...very nice that engine designs have been able to balance increased power, etc., along with better fuel economy at the same time. And the mention of the JGC being heavier while still doing well with these new engines is also a positive thing.

Not impressed by the results of the thread,

please provide power to weight ratio's

that's the real measure of progress.

granted weight=safety improvements but meh.

Ill gladly take my current 98 cherokee with 4.0L that has EXCELLENT visibility vs. the GC terrible visibility and selectable 2wd to 4wd drive capability.

newer isnt always better.

Strange.

My old 2012 along with my new 2015 WK2s have Great visibility.

I've heard some folks HATE the sight lines on the WK2. One person at work had a WK2 as a company vehicle & changed it out for a Chevy Trailblazer because he felt the Jeep had to many blind spots & poor sight lines.

Strangely, I love the view from my WK2 and hated the Chevy Trailblazer sight lines. IMHO, that thing had horrible blind spots along with poor visibility.
