MY15 depreciation due to recall?

With the recall on the MY14/15 shifter and the subsequent freeze on all sales pertaining to vehicles with the issue, how much of a depreciation hit are MY14/15 owners going to see on their resale value?

In 6 months or more the recall SHOULD be resolved but that will mean there will be a ton of MY15 GC available with little to no miles on them. Should MY15 expect a huge hit in the value of their vehicles? Worth selling the vehicle before the recall is issued and this problem arises?

Re: MY15 depreciation due to recall?

Its a good question and is really hard to say exactly what will happen. If lets say it is true that the market will eventually be flooded with new 2015 Grand Cherokees when most peoples cars have 20+ thousand miles on them, then yes it will make selling yours more difficult. Why would someone buy a 2015 with 30,000 miles for 35 grand when they can get a new one for somewhere near that price? So in that sense I can see it having a negative effect.
The other problem is regarding trade in. I have already heard one story on the forum where a dealership wouldn't even take the vehicle in on trade because of the recalls. I was at a dealership two weeks ago just for fun because I wanted to test drive a 2016 and see how the start/stop feature is. Even though I wasn't considering buying it I told the salesman I would be trading in my near new 2015 High Altitude (which only has 4K miles on it)...Since I was truly curious what they would give me on trade I asked him to see what he can do. Needless to say he never called me back LOL. Whether thats just a lazy salesman or if he didn't call back for a reason (because mine is a 2015) I don't know.
Regardless I am slightly concerned over the situation myself. I typically go through cars fairly often, and now my 2015 has two open recalls, possibly a third if something comes up with the airbag thing I'm hearing about, a tranny that just started barking the tires on the 2-3 shift haha, and a car thats on the news for killing an actor...yes I know it was likely operator fault, but thats not how the media portrays it. Hummmm, what to do what to do.
Would getting rid of the car now be better than later? That's the big question, and the even bigger question is if you do it now, can you find a dealership that would even take it? Nothing wrong with keeping the Jeep either, but now for me I gotta figure out what's going on with my tranny, and thats not sounding very promising based on what I'm hearing over on the troubleshooting/problem section.

Re: MY15 depreciation due to recall?

I just got MY14 for $25k/30kMiles and I'm not thinking to seller in the near future. So I'm also buying the lifetime warranty meaning I will keep it as long as I can. The issues is not even confirm if it's driver error or shifter glitch.

Yeap, from Zeigler will be good option if you are NOT in FLORIDA. I'am in fl and the price is $1k more on all of the options. So I use this one that doesn't ask for state and seems cheaper also.

Re: MY15 depreciation due to recall?

What I've read so far: 1) FCA issued a profound apology; 2) Police report said Jeep was running and in neutral; 3) FCA will investigate.

I'd say for the short term the monetary hit on trying to unload a 14/15 will be painful. Long term - depends on how long this drags out.

A lot of examples of brands with serious consumer issues... exploding tires, rollovers, airbag issues, fire risk, stuck accelerators, cheating emissions, etc.

I've never experienced this shifter but from reading here the opinions run from simple, to take's a while to get used to, to a tragic design flaw.

Short term = pain; long term = memories are fleeting.

As an owner I'm glad FCA commented immediately; what they do going forward is anyone's guess. It could turn out well, horrid, or forgotten about in the next round of the news-cycle.
