NAVTEQ and Jeep = Frustration

I have become increasingly frustrated waiting for the update for the maps in my 2014 Grand Cherokee Summit.

I have given up on contacting NAVTEQ where I only get the "available soon" canned response.

So I contacted Jeep through their online chat. Here is the transcript:

Delores: Hi, my name is Delores with Jeep Customer Care, How may I help you today?

ME: The maps in my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit are approaching three years old! When will an update be released?

Delores: I would be happy to give you the phone number to contact for further information.

Delores: May I have your mailing address and phone number please?

ME: If this phone number is for Navteq, it is worthless. For more than 6 months they have been telling me updates will be released soon.

Delores: No this is to update your file so if we send out recalls from Chrysler that we have your mailing addres correct.

Delores: Could I have you verify your mailing address please?

ME: My phone number is XXX-XXX-XXX. My address is: XXXXX

Delores: Thank you ME.

Delores: I am showing that you have 3 open recalls on your file.

ME: What does this have to do with updating the maps in my navigation system?

Delores: It doesn't I just wanted to let you know that you will need to contact your dealership to have these completed. Also you will need to contact NAVTEQ for the Map updates and their phone number is (866) 628-8372.

Delores: We do not have any information on when the maps will be updated however NAVTEQ should be able to advise you with more information.

Delores: Is there anything else that I can look into for you today?

ME: NAVTEQ only says the updates will be available soon. They have said this for more than a half year. I really like my Jeep; but this map update issue is very frustrating. Jeep needs to respond since NAVTEQ won't.

Delores: I apologize however we do not have information for map updates they are done through NAVTEQ.

Delores: So if the map updates are not updated they will advise you if you have the updated version or not.

Delores: I would advise you to contact them.

ME: I have contacted them several times. They aren't anymore helpful than Jeep!

Delores: You can also go to the website mapreporter.navteq.com

Delores: or http://www.here.com

ME: I have, many times. It will only tell me that updates will be available soon.

Delores: I apologize however this is the only place you will be able to get that information on map updates.

Delores: You will have to keep checking back with them.

ME: Obviously Jeep doesn't care about their customers. Thank you.

Delores: We do not deal with the Map Updates this is done through NAVTEQ.

Delores: You have reached the Jeep Customer Assistance Center and we do not handle the Roadway Map updates.

ME: It's a Jeep. A Jeep dealership sold me the vehicle. Jeep should take responsibility for their vehicles.

Delores: We do for the vehicles however this is a navigation update.

Delores: not the vehicle.

ME: The navigation system is part of the vehicle.

Delores: I am unable to further assist you as you will have to contact Navteq Mr. ME.

Delores: I apologize if this is an inconvenience to you however we are not equipped to advise you of map updates.

Re: NAVTEQ and Jeep = Frustration

How do you figure that the maps are three years old, if your vehicle is only one year old?

Re: NAVTEQ and Jeep = Frustration

The 2014 JCG navigation system IS Garmin based. I find I prefer my 2 portable Garmin units performance for several reasons. Paid an awful lot for old maps, no free updates and less performance. I do have a handful of suggestions to optimize this system....... Not worth listing here.

I agree. The built-in system is ok, and better than nothing, but I plug in the NUVI all the time.

One glaring difference IMHO is the built-in screen's poor responsiveness to finger-dragging the map.

Is there a way to "sync" poi's, favorites, etc. from the NUVI to the built-in?

Nope. Just because it is Garmin based does not mean it is compatible or performs as a Garmin does. For the cost of a Jeep map update you get a full function GPS with at least one map update per year, usually more, for as long as you own it. I have a NUVI 750 which is probably at least 5 years old and it gets the job done. The in-Jeep unit is really lacking in function and features; next vehicle will not have it.

Re: NAVTEQ and Jeep = Frustration

Wow, that whole conversation is pointless. So the OP decided to take his frustration out on the customer service person who has no pull, knowledge, or anything to do with the Maps. Yes, I wish NavTeq would come out with an update but I'm not worrying about it just like most users aren't. This isn't just a JEEP thing, its an every manufacture that has built in GPS. UConnect is used in atleast 14 other vehicles (MB included). The frustration should be taken out on NavTeq, not to Jeep. Most people would rather use their phone or a stand alone GPS instead of the Jeeps. Keep pounding on NavTeq to get the update but Jeep (or any car manufacture) will have no control or push to get it out to customers.

BTW... Telling Jeep that they doesn't care about its customers because of no GPS update is just the frustration getting to you. Yes Jeep got their money from you and aren't doing a thing about the GPS (no different than buying something from an electronics store that needs a firmware update to fix an issue and they don't come out with it as fast as we would like). There are more things in life that more worry about than a GPS update in your car. My 2 cents

If you are not interested in the thread then don't read it and comment on it. He has a legitimate complaint shared by many. everything on this entire site are first world issues pick your interest its a site for enthusiasts and people wanting to comment and find information on things just like this.

In dash systems obviously take longer than portable Garmins they always have but in all of my in dash systems I have not had one take this long.

And he should also be complaining to Jeep, Chrysler should be taking responsibility for their vendors like any good company should. They should be pressuring them to perform when there are issues and this is becoming an issue for some. If my ZF transmission that was designed and built entirely by ZF in Germany has internal problems they don't tell me to contact ZF directly to resolve the issues. though this is a more minor problem it is still an issue that at this point Chrysler needs to start taking some responsibility for. you obviously have no idea how customer vendor relations "should" work. cars now a days are a mix of parts and software from hundreds of vendors all over the world and Chrysler should manage their vendors and apply pressure when pressure is needed not wash their hands of it.

If you got better things in life to worry about than map updates then don't comment here and criticize people for wanting to talk about it. it may be pointless to you its not pointless to others.

Re: NAVTEQ and Jeep = Frustration

Our 2008 WK2 navigation didn't have our neighborhood of 614 homes on the map and all of the homes were built between 2004 and 2006.

Chrysler has ton's of control, they have the agreement with NAVTEQ as the provider of maps. Perhaps they need to revisit their contract. They do read these forums so this type of discussion has value. Granted the OP might have been a bit more tactful, but the support person should have moved him up the line of support instead of creating a bigger issue.
