Need help with electronic shifter question

I apologize if this has been answered before but I did a search and could not find anything on the web or here. I think b/c my question is so specific.
Anyways here it goes:

This morning while driving to the train station, while stopped at a light, I leaned over to pick something off the passenger side floor. When I did that I inadvertently bumped the shifter into neutral. The light then turned green and I fuddled around to get it back in drive. I have a '14 so it is the annoying electronic shifter that I can never seem to get into the gear I want. When I finally got it back into drive it was showing the gear numbers next to D in the cluster. Not the paddle shifter gears, but what looks like a grayed out gear number right next to the D. The Jeep seems to drive the same, but I'm wondering what I did to make those show up, why they are showing, and how to make them go away. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Need help with electronic shifter question

I have that all the time but hadn't noticed it for the first few hundred miles (it is quite subtle). I quite like it. Not sure I helped or gave the right answer though

To clarify. I don't like the shifter, I like the gear showing beside the D

I guess I should have asked in my original post if it is something that is always supposed to be there. It is subtle and I was wondering if I just never noticed it. Although I have a '14 I just bought it certified about a month ago.

I don't know many people who do.

Its customizable. Mine came from the factory showing what gear you are in at all times and I like that. Maybe you just didn't notice it before because I cant imagine a setting on the evic changing just from accidentally bumping the shifter.

I'm guessing I just did not notice. As long as others show the same thing then I am cool.

I was thinking that maybe I did something fuddling around trying to get it back in drive. I think I hit it forward and then back, and then down to sport, and finally back into normal drive. Not sure I'll ever get used to this thing.

Re: Need help with electronic shifter question

Is it not the case that the current gear is shown clearly when you're in Sport mode, and is grayed out (but still sorta kinda visible) when you're in regular Drive mode? So the OP probably ended up in Sport mode? Or am I wrong about that, and the gear number is only lit up in manual paddle shifter mode?

I can say for sure that I was not in Sport mode. It is pretty clear b/c of the little green flag. Also I think it is grayed out in both drive modes and only clearly illuminated in paddle shift mode, when it is very apparent.

Re: Need help with electronic shifter question

Ah, now I understand your question better - yes I believe the grayed out gear number is normal. It's the lighting-it-up that comes and goes with paddle shifter mode. I would like it if it were configurable to stay on all the time, largely because it's nice to know where you're starting from when you first switch into paddle mode.

Re: Need help with electronic shifter question

You can configure this in the Settings menu - I like having the gear displayed next to "D", just wish it was a little brighter.

Re: Need help with electronic shifter question

I wish my 2013 would show the gear numbers. To me, that was an improvement over my '13.

Re: Need help with electronic shifter question

My gear number is always showing. However, it's so dim you can hardly see it. I Wish you could make it brighter.
