Anyway, features come and features go.
We must all rush out and trade our poor underfeatured WK-2s on used Potty Cruisers...

Capable, arguably, but no more so than a Nissan Xterra.

OP has a point, the WK-2s are hideously expensive, with the Limited and Laredo seemingly aimed at the more hard core Jeep crowd and the Overland and higher aimed at the semi-luxo crowd. Pricier than pretty much all of the competition and even pricier than some really nice performance European sport coupes.

... and they do not appear to be gathering a lot of dust so someone must think they are worth it.

The wk2's are cheap when compared to the competition. Think about it, off road capable, v8 engine, pano sunroof, leather, nav. How many suv's offer those options under 55k? Not many, if any.

I know BMW Porsche and Range Rover do but not for anywhere near 55k.

Are you comparing a JGC overland/summit to a Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder? Jeeps are nicer, offer more and cost more. It's fair I think.

Hideously expensive compared to what?!

What competition is the WK2 more expensive than? In fact, I find the WK2 one of the better automotive values available on the road today, especially when you factor in what you can actually pay for one vs MSRP. I paid ~$42k for my loaded $49k sticker Overland, where else can you find a vehicle this solid, capable, and well optioned and appointed for $42k?!? Believe me, after my experience with my 2011 I tried, I drove *everything* remotely comparable and I came to the conclusion that one had to spend at least $10-15k more than the Overland to get a vehicle as capable and nice.

What "really nice european sport coupes" can be had nowadays for the price of a WK2 without being smaller engined or reduced in options?

Then you would really be pi$$ed if you leased the 2011 Mercedes E350 ... it doesn't have Xenon either and at the time, it was something like a $5K upgrade (along with other options).
