I understand your logic 100% as normally people dont like anything newer than what they have, but in this case I really feel they butchered a sweet front/rear end just for the sake of calling it a mid-model update. I love my WK2 and was seriously considered upgrading to a 2014+ once released until I saw this post.

The grille screams crossover SUV and the headlights/tail lights are just downright bad and do not suit the rest of the WK2 styling at all. The one change I do like is the deletion of the rear liftgate chrome but then those taillights just ruin it. It totally looks like they went into the Chrysler parts bin and stole bits from the compass and durango and tried to pass it off ad a mid-model update.

Edit: After my knee jerk reaction to the pics I now realize the front headlights are tape'd so there is still hope for those! but the grill and rear tails are still no good.

I started thinking about it.....my only hope is that the entire top part of the grill, the long piece that also extends under the headlights, is not entirely chrome on the Overland and Summit models.

^^^I'm with you...I have been considering maybe going with a '14 but if things hold true as what's in these pics forget it. I'm sure the interior and tech upgrades will be a nice improvement but that front "smiley" grille is absolutely hideous and whimpy looking. The rear lights are okay, but they don't flow well either. I'll ultimately see what it's like in person but I'm not liking the front-end one bit.

Also, I'm failing to see how the "new" rearend more closely resembles a Durango than the current model....

This is exactly how I feel. Even my fiancee made reference to a minivan when she saw the rear end (of the Jeep).

The 2014 tail lights look like the Durango tails flipped upside down. The current model WK2 tail lights look much better, as far as their shape. Wish they would have kept the same shape but just made them LED bulbs, like the Audi S4 tails:

I also agree on the head lamps + grill... I know I'm biased because I have a 2012, but the front end looks more like Jeep Compass now:

Re: New 2014 Spy Pics on Autoblog

I just looked at the pics for the first time on my large computer screen (only saw on my iphone until now), and you know what, I have a feeling that people are going to like it. Once that black tape is removed from the headlights and we get to see a nice Overland or Summit, I bet im gonna be a fan :-)
I just dont want it too close to a Compass because IMO the Compass is ass ugly.

Re: New 2014 Spy Pics on Autoblog

The reason why people are getting so worked up over spy shots is because you're looking at a 2014. Period. I don't even know why they put tape there. It's not hiding anything major but the final complete shape.

Re: New 2014 Spy Pics on Autoblog

yep. There is too much raw plastic and it runs way too high in the front and the rounded grille is weak looking. I'm sure the headlights will be nice, but with the square outward shape within, they may not flow with the round grille...Time will tell.

But when the new model out crawls, hauls, and shoots, that happy grille will have something to smile about.

What I'm really trying to do is justify to myself that the change of appearance is not that bad
