New Guy/First Jeep Ordering New Questions!

Ok, so pretty broad topic, please stick with me!

I'm new, never owned a Jeep before, but have always secretly wanted one! Well, I just happened to be looking for a new car and was checking out the Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, Edge, and BMW X1. Long story short, one of my friends just got a Wrangler and told me to check out Jeep. I passed it off, never really liked the Jeep's I saw besides the Rubicon, but that doesn't fit the bill of my needs. So, I ended up test driving a GC and really liked it! While it's more expensive than the above (except the BMW), it's filled with a lot of goodies!

I'm a HUGE BMW fan, but I can't ignore the fact that the GC has a lot more options and standard features. Unfortunately, BMW has been falling behind these last few years. They still command a premium, but just don't have the features.

I am concerned though, because the GC is a lot of money, and while I'm going to lease, I'm still hesitant because of all of issues I've read about. I'm going to order new, so hopefully most, if not all of these issues, will be resolved by now, since it's been a bit of time since release.

That said, before I place my order, I'm wondering if there's anything I should ask for/know about? What do you guys tell/ask the dealer when you ordered? Anything I should be aware of? The only thing I'm requesting at this point is no front license plate/no holes in the bumper.

I hope I'm making the right decision going with Jeep!

14' JGC Limited in Max Steel with 8.4" (no nav). I'm getting it for slightly over 4% below invoice, $3,500 off MSRP...considering this is local I don't think that's too bad. The DC and Texas buy and just too far away and wouldn't save me much with time and travel expenses.

Congrats on the new Jeep!

As the ex-owner of an early build 2014 GC V6 Limited 4x4 myself (and now current owner of a 2014 V6 Overland 4x4), my advice is to pony up the extra money and get the 8.4AN radio w/NAV...it has more features (including HD radio). I also recommend if you were thinking about adding some accessories, that you purchase them online, and install them yourself. Things like front tow hooks, mud flaps, pedal set, lighted door sills, and skid plates are a piece of cake to do yourself...and save a buck too!

Tell us a little more about your intended use of your new Jeep...will it go off-road a lot? If not, I'd go with the 20" wheels which make the GC handle better on the road compared to the 18" wheels. Will you be doing a lot of towing? Aagin if not, the V6 is more than enough...with better gas mileage to boot over the more expensive V8. I also was a fan of the power sunroof.

BTW, I'm a big fan of BMW as well. My wife just got a new loaded 2014 328i xDrive Sport...very nice!

If it makes you feel better, I chose the Grand Cherokee Summit over the BMW X5. Have had it for a week and a half now and am loving it. If you could afford it, and are a tech junkie like me, I would highly recommend you spend the extra money for the Summit.

Re: New Guy/First Jeep Ordering New Questions!

We bought our 2014 Limited in November of '13 after beginning our car search looking at BMW X3 (and driving 3 or 4 new and late model used ones). Much more plush and tech for your dollar on the JGC than on the BMW. We'd have paid $10K more for a similarly equipped X3.

We have had no problems with the Jeep and are loving our decision.

Re: New Guy/First Jeep Ordering New Questions!

Thanks for the responses!

I WISH I could afford the Summit, but I just simply can't, and that's part of the reason for the base Limited with only the basic 8.4" added. Quite frankly, it's an expensive vehicle and if I REALLY like it, and like the re-design in 2017, I may go the Overland/Summit route if I can swing it...but for now, I'm going to do a lease.

Options...I'm only getting the basic 8.4" because I honestly could care-a-less about "HD" radio and navigation, I just simply don't need it, and can't justify the extra expense. Same for the sunroof...I'm coming from a MINI with a full moonroof, which is awesome, but I haven't really used it in years, so I think I'll be fine without it.

As for the vehicle use, it will be a daily driver. I drive 90% highway, but I plan to add a 2.5" lift and 32" tires just because I've always wanted a lifted Jeep! While not the worst, SW Ohio winters can be fun too, so I may do some minor off-road, but would eventually like to get a JK for that.

My "end-goal" since I'm doing a lease, is to either buy it out if I still like it, or get the 2017 when it's released if I like it. That's some time away, so we'll see! Maybe BMW will step up their game by then! I really like the Evoque too!

^ You could get NAV activated for ~$500.
It was a no brainer for me at that price. I personally don't think the "higher" models are worth the premium unless you're going with an SRT8.

Did you add the NAV yet

Re: New Guy/First Jeep Ordering New Questions!

You can certainly have the dealer add the NAV option to the 8.4 after the fact (for about $600) but it's not as "complete" a navigation system as the 8.4AN is from the factory. And you cannot swap out the systems...whatever comes from the factory is what stays in the vehicle unless you go to third-party aftermarket devices. (Chrysler policy)

You can negotiate the price that's why I stated ~$500.
I don't know why you'd even consider swapping out when they're nearly identical? Double the flash RAM, HD radio, and sensor assisted GPS is not enough to give someone the reason to do so.
Of course people with the 8.4AN will say it's the cats meow and they can't live without it.

Re: New Guy/First Jeep Ordering New Questions!

MOFSTEEL, historically, it's not been uncommon for folks to ask about swapping out, so that's why I mentioned it's not permitted on the MY14 by Chrysler. Previous model years didn't have that hard restriction. So if someone really wants whatever the extra bells and whistles are with the 8.4AN, they really need to buy it up front!

Anyone know if you can order a Limited with body colored mirrors instead of the chrome?
