Re: New Honda Pilot vs Grand Cherokee (warning…)

As the speed increases, the margins become even less. Starting from 60 and up, the Hemi just keeps pushing more and more power- that torque and displacement cannot be dismissed. Besides, this Hemi engine has been around for eons and its not fair to compare a much older engine to the latest one with efficiency being its primary goal. I would say as others pointed out that only in the reliability department does the Pilot have the real advantage but that is not even the case for those who have '15, 5.7L models For me this type of bench racing is best left on the table. The real test is actually taking it out for the drive. OP- test drive the Pilot and the JGC and then form your own impressions. And yes- the V6 JGC is better for comparison reasons.

Well there it is. You are buying a Grand Cherokee and you will love it.

Re: New Honda Pilot vs Grand Cherokee (warning…)

The weight savings is in part to lighter high strength steel that's available now vs when the GC was designed and built. The iron block hemi doesn't help either.
If the GC was designed today I would expect it to be lighter as well.

Re: New Honda Pilot vs Grand Cherokee (warning…)

A car's top speed or 0-60 or even 1/4 mile time is hardly an indicator of how good it is. Yes it may be faster or paper or even at the drag strip than the Jeep, and most importantly than the V8 Jeep but it is the area under the curve for the power and torque that dictate it's driving dynamics. Honda builds peaky engines and if one must rev the engine to red line to achieve such performance, I am sure it will not make for a good daily driver.

And the comment on driving dynamics and age of the platform is again somewhat misplaced. The Jeep's air suspension is probably better than the steel springs on the Honda. Lastly, who wouldn't expect improvements in engine and chassis technology between two cars for which the first model years are separated by 6 years?

Extremely doubtful. Honda/Toyota typically have very high resale, while the Grand Cherokee does not.

As for the Pilot. 18mpg is pathetic! Our Accord gets 27mpg with that engine and only a 5 speed trans. And the "observed" 16mpg from the 5.7/8-speed is pretty suspect. I get close to 19 with the 5/6 speed trans and 50/50 hwy/city and a very heavy right foot. Either way, I see it as nearly 100 less HP, a lot less torque, and only 2 better mpg???

The Pilot is an appliance. No thanks.
A lot of posters on C/D had the same reaction about the 0-60 time. But then the new Ford Edge test was published. It's a bit smaller but similar weight to the Pilot.
4437 lbs., 315hp twin turbo 2.7 V6 got to 60 in 5.6.

I don't disagree. Most Japanese cars are appliances, good quality, but not that much personality.

Well, that's kind of the point. As mid-size SUV replacements arrive over the next couple of years, they will be more efficient.
On the other hand, the new Ford Edge test was interesting. It's a bit smaller but similar weight to the Pilot.
4437 lbs., AWD, 315hp twin turbo 2.7 V6, 0-60 in 5.6 - pretty quick. And C/D loved the engine. But while performance was impressive, mpg remained poor: only 16 for the Edge, same as the 5.7 GC. As with most of Ford's recent smaller displacement turbo engines, the real world mpg gains are not impressive.

Nevertheless, when the next gen GC arrives, what, in 2018? I'd be surprised if the 5.7 wasn't replaced by a turbo V6 of some sort, unfortunately.

I agree that v8s are probably on the way out in the future but 16 mpg observed on the ford Edge you have got to be kidding me that is terrible for what it is.

so Car and Driver Observed mixed mpg is

18 for Honda Pilot
17 for v6 GC
16 for v8 GC
16 for Ford Edge

Thats a fairly tight circle on observed mileage. The Edge and Pilot are quicker but 1000 lbs lighter with no off road ability. If we are getting rid of v8s for mileage concerns they still have a lot of work to do in my opinion.

The efficiency winner here is still the V8 Hemi.

I so much agree with you lol. A while back ago I went from a 2008 Honda Pilot VP to a 2012 GC Overland and would never go back. Yes the Pilot has great space and was pretty decent on gas mileage but it's a minivan with Awd. I only got it because my wife wanted something with a third row and it was a better buy at that time then the Commander. But once it came time for something new I had to get me a Jeep.

Re: New Honda Pilot vs Grand Cherokee (warning…)

The Honda Pilot has its crowd and its purpose but as many said, the oversized boxy looks just does not cut it. Similarly I find that the latest Acura MDX has degenerated in the looks department- in fact they are looking more like minivans and lacks the strong, rugged and sharp looks of the previous generations.

Re: New Honda Pilot vs Grand Cherokee (warning…)

Well, for all intents and purposes, the Pilot should be compared with Laredo optioned for interior creatures but no off-road capabilities (no ORA-1; no transfer case). This way it will be the lightest GC.

http://wk2jeeps.com/2014/2014_wk2_specifications.pdf

The essentially AWD Laredo comes in at 4677 lbs.
The Pilot (with a 9 speed) comes in at 4300 lbs.

I would be curious about the fuel mileage comparison between these two trims. Because I do not struggle at all to get 28-30 mpg at 60 mph according to the fuel meter (about 1.5 mpg optimistic over the real fuel economy). In fact with 4 people and luggage for 10 days, I got real 25.5 mpg over a 5000 mile journey to Wyoming 2 years ago. The pictures and supporting details are here on the site somewhere.
