New member looking to become GCO owner

Hi everyone I have a leased mercedes vehicle which will be up in about 6 months. So I figured why not start researching for a replacement vehicle now. I know I do not want another car but something that is a little more versatile with 4WD. I first started thinking pickup truck as I wanted something that I could tow with. But then realized I do not need something that big as I only need to tow a motorcycle and do a little camping. So I started looking at alternatives. Iniatially started thinking toyota 4 runner I know but did not care for the look of those. So the other nite I was looking at some vehicles on my Ipad and my 4 yr old son says daddy why dont you get a jeep there cool. Now I started thinking about how many 4dr wranglers I see everyday on the road and thought would not hurt to go take a look. So last weekend stopped in at the local jeep dealer and walked around the wrangler section. A few of them were open so I sat in a couple just to get an overall feel. At first everything seems nice but then you start thinking if you could live with this vehicle everyday and does it fit your checklist of needs and functions. [Answer] just barely. With that along comes the man who jockeys the vehicles around the lot and we start talking and right away he says you will not be happy in a wrangler. He says come take a look at the GC's so off we go. First one he shows me was a white summit with the football looking interior WOW. That is a beautiful looking jeep. But the price is a little more than I thought. Then I see a white overland w/ black interior very nice. Best part he has the keys with him for this and and a few other GC's. So I get in start it up he shows me all the features and other neat stuff. That pano sunroof is awesome. I never realized how nice the inside of these were. The overland meets all the criteria I was looking for perfectly. It can tow, has plenty of seat room and storage space for vacationing. Great for the beach and snow. So I think the overland is going to be my next vehicle. I'am actually thinking of turning in my car early so I could have it by spring. Now comes the dilemma what color and what engine. Like the V6 only because no MDS. As far as colors undecided because dealer only has black, white, granite, waiting to see Max Stl and Drk Cherry in person. Well thanks for reading very sorry for such a long first post. I guess I get a little carried away sometime. Hopefully I will be part of the GC jeep garage club soon.

Re: New member looking to become GCO owner

Don't get me wrong I love V8s as much as anybody. But I feel if I'am paying 2k plus for a V8 I want it to run on all 8 cyls all the time. I do not think I'am alone here on this as there are an awful lot of people looking for a way to delete there MDS.

Run in Sport Mode...

But honestly, I never notice any effects of MDS, except for the reasonably good fuel economy I get.

That what I suspected. You are confusing ECO mode with MDS. Nobody is looking to defeat MDS. Makes no sense to want to. It NEVER takes the motor away from you when you are actually using it. It only does it thing when you are driving like a nanny.

Trust me, I am a performance enthusiast and then some and if MDS reared it's head and messed with my "fun" I would be the first to figure out a way to defeat it. I have perked up my Hemi and MDS is all good. It works wonderfully in the Corvette with zero performance or fun impact and it's the same on the JGC. Here's the scoop on MDS:

Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - 2011 Grand Cherokee engines

There are other reasons to not pick the Hemi, this isn't one of them.

You really dont notice the mds much at all when driving slit push on gas and it shuts off immediately, the full v8 power is there when ever you want it. Only time you notice it a little is highway crusing a slight and i mean slight rumble. Mds is how you get such good highway mileage out of the v8. If you really dont want it at all just put it in sport mode and its totally off.

Not true actually. Its all about all the driver inputs and engine/tranny running situation. While driving in Sport mode certainly makes one drive in a manner not conducive to MDS activation it does not prevent it. I can vouch for it as my Corsa cat-back exhaust let's me know every time MDS kicks in. I drive 100% in Sport mode and if I am on cruise control on the freeway in the flat parts of town MDS will kick in. Its the only time I get drone is for like 2 secs ad MDS kicks in and then the Corsa chamber thingy cancels it.

Re: New member looking to become GCO owner

Thanks everyone for the replies. I guess it seems the MDS is not as bad as I had initially thought. I feel a lot more reassured in the 5.7 now. Looks like I will go with the V8 at order time. Now I just need to decide on what color I want.

Yes, there are a lot of stupid people in the world.
You can easily turn off the MDS, just keep your foot in it or run in sport mode all the time.

Or you can play "can you really feel the MDS at all" for several thousand miles until you give up or buy a scanner that can tell you when it is engaged. Unless you have a bohurkus like the princess and the pea, I'd have to see proof before I'd believe you can catch it in action.

Before you overthink this, drive both on similarly optioned vehicles. Measure the width of your grin afterwards.

The Hemi and the Diesel currently use the original transmission, same as used on the big Bimmers. The V6 uses a Mopar licensed version that appears to have had a more difficult time getting the software right on...

You aren't gonna kill Mustangs with the Hemi, but at least the Subie will be given proper respect compared to the V6. The V6 is nice, the Hemi just dials it up a notch and gives you a far better rest of the drive train.

Re: New member looking to become GCO owner

Thanks ls for the reply. Yes your probably right I'am overthinking the MDS. I was just afraid that it was going to sound like a sewing machine when it kicks in. But now that I have gotten some real world feedback on this issue I feel much better about the V8 come order time. Also like you have stated you get the bulletproof trans. Thanks to everyone for putting my worries to rest. I actually just returned from a jeep dealer thats 45 mins from my house. Wanted to see some different colors besides Black, White, Silver. They had Dark cherry, True Blue, Max Steel. all very nice colors but then I saw a Black pearl altitude sitting out in the sun and WOW that color is unbelievable. Especially with the black wheels. I think that might be my choice. Its a shame you can not order an Overland Altitude. I think buyers would be all over that package. Was planning to go inside and go for a test drive as they had quite a few V8s. But in the middle of my drooling over the altitude got a text from the other half with a picture of her dashboard with check engine light on so had to cut the visit short and shoot home to investigate. I guess I will have to wait till next week.

Re: New member looking to become GCO owner

Well, you don't want the Altitude if you want a V8... Not available. Altitude is what I personally call a "Laredo special edition" that comes with a defined set of features and only has a few options. What you see is what you get.

Re: New member looking to become GCO owner

Yes I understand that jim. What I meant was that I wish you could order an Overland GC with the 5.7 and then have option to order an Altitude package. Body color door handles, mirrors, lettering, black wheels, etc.
