I have my appointment to go to my local Jeep dealership TONIGHT to order my new Overland. I am 100% set on everything except exterior color. The specs are:
2011 Overland Hemi 4x4
-Saddle interior
-Pano roof (dont want rear DVD)
-Adaptive cruise package
For the exterior colors I am still undecided between Dark Charcoal or Mineral Gray. I came across some amazing pictures from forum member Nbtstatic and his new Dark Charcoal and I think thats what I have my heart set on. That paint with saddle interior I think would be unbelievable. I must admit though looks incredible with his beige interior.
Now I do understand that saddle in apparently on hold however my dealership said they can still order it but could obviously take a looong time to get. He said they are a very high volume dealer here in the Chicago area and they have even been able to get things expedited before. How true that is I dont know, but as long as I can get my order in I dont care as I wasnt planning on buying one until summer anyway.
Soooo, what are your thoughts?
Mineral Gray with saddle or Dark Charcoal with saddle? As of now im leaning towards Charcoal as every picture I see of mineral just doesnt look good. Maybe it doesnt take pictures well I dont know but im thinking its going to be just too light. I have seen it in person and like it and in videos on youtube. But I have seen no high quality pictures that have me sold on it (unlike Nbtstatic's pics).
I'd go with mineral gray. With dark charcoal, you're basically getting a watered-down black that's just as hard to keep clean looking as black. With mineral gray, it'll be sustantially easier to keep looking clean.
Besides, I think it's a better color, anyway. Not as good as [clean] black, but easily my 2nd favorite.
FYI, Check the dealer's computer to verify you can order a non-summit
with Saddle interior. The dark charcoal is so close to black, my suggestion
is to park them side-by-side...then choose, as this is something you will have
to live with. Enjoy
Yes I certainly will be I spoke with the dealership today and they said it can be ordered. Im keeping my fingers crossed and I will report back when I get home later to see what happens. We all know how dealerships are lol
I have seen all the colors in person and like I said I like both mineral and charcoal. I dont mind having a dark car thats tough to keep clean as I am a neat freak and anal about detailing. Just ask the future Overlands roommate (2006 Z06 vette) about that It just seems that in every picture mineral looks somewhat boring where as when clean that charcoal just looks stunning. Alright im going to take a ride over to the stealership maybe they have both colors around to compare (even if they are laredo's).
I prefer the mineral gray. The light has to be just right before I can make the distinction between black, blackberry and dark charcoal. I actually think green looks best with saddle but that color doesn't seem to be finding many takers.
We drove by the Jeep dealership last night, and they had a bunch of jeeps lined up. My wife spotted the Mineral Gray, and said that is by far her favorite. I'm glad that is what I have on order....
There's probably nothing that is more subjective or based on personal preference than color selection.
I briefly considered the Charcoal but like others thought it was too close to black for my taste. I am also a clean car guy but that's tough especially during this time of year. Mineral Gray does a very nice job of catching the light off of the WK2's sheet metal creases even when it's got a coating of dust. But if you're torn between the two colors, I don't think you can go wrong. Go with Charcoal if you're leaning that way! Good luck with the order.
I had the same decision, I thought Charcoal was what I wanted until I saw it side by side with Mineral Gray and Black. Ended up ordering Mineral Gray. I really wanted the Saddle but unless they have changed the option since the 27th (and that's quite possible) the dealer can't even select the Saddle interior so your car will not be "ordered", meaning put into Chrysler's system, until that option is released and the dealer can select it. It makes no difference how large the dealer is, they all use the same ordering system.
I'm not making this up or repeating what someone else told me, I sat there in front of the computer with the GM as we entered my order and was on speaker phone with the factory when they told him they did not know when Saddle would be opened on the ordering system and even if it was, when it might actually get built. Since I MUST have a vehicle by mid March I ended up ordering a Mineral Gray w/ Black Overland 4X4 V8 (25P package). After spending some time in a black on black Overland I think I like the black interior better so I'm actually glad we couldn't order it.
Oh, and you would think that combo with no other options would be something I could find but there isn't one available within 500 miles and none of the local dealers have a stock order in the pipeline.

Sounds like we went through the same thought process, mjw. I do not have a single regret about the package I wound up with; in fact, I like it more than the one I ordered because the one I found on a dealer lot was identical to my order with one exception-- this one had the ACC package that I had not ordered. You are going to seriously dig Mineral Gray and black leather.
So, if the DC area is not too far for you to travel for a pickup, your exact vehicle is already on order in the pipeline through my local dealer. Everything is the same, down to the exact dollar amount on the invoice. This order was placed on 12/21/10. When I called my dealer to request a deposit refund, I told him I would let other potential interested parties know about this order. FYI.
PS: When I called to update my local dealer, he told me that a VIN had been issued on my order, so it made some quick progress through the system...
How on Earth is that possible?!? I was D1 status before you even ordered. Is that something the dealer told you when you ordered? Is it actually built already?
That is probably my favorite combo, BTW. If I wasn't too cheap to wash my car every few days, I would have gone with that!
Alright well I just got back from the dealership. Good news and bad news, but I think in the end the good news out weighs the bad.
Ok so even after explaining to the salesmas the situation with saddle he informed me they can get it ordered and I even told them to double check before I come in. Typical dealership ofcourse they dont and they come back and say you are right it cannot be ordered and its done, cancelled, no longer a interior option on the GC's. They then told me they had a Overland ordered but it was black exterior with saddle interior and had the mopar chrome package which I didnt want either. Anyway, I didnt want a black car, and I didnt want to pay several hundred for a chrome package just to be able to get the saddle interior. Either way I have always loved light tan interiors and loved the new dark frost beige and its contrast in colors between the tan, wood, and dark brown upper dash/steering wheel. Gorgeous!
So I am proud to say that user Nbtstatic sold me with his absolutely amazing pictures and I ordered a new Overland V8 4x4 Dark Charcoal with Dark Frost Beige interior, pano sunroof, and adaptive cruise tech package!!!!!
The sale price is $41,225 + tax/title/license and I think I did VERY well. That was several weeks of email battling with sales managers all over the Chicago area and turns out I got the absolute best price from the dealership literally 2 miles from my house. I couldnt be happier.
Thank you guys for the information and especially to Nbtstatic for posting all those incredible pictures of your charcoal/light beige Overland!!!
haha how did you know of my bad habits? maybe you remember me from cherokee srt8 .com? I think I had a different username over there but yes I did have a 2008 SRT8 as well and a few other cars inbetween. This one I hope to keep for a long time and its the first car I have ever purchased brand new. My wife is pregnant and a SUV sounds like it might fit our future just perfectly. Especially this one
Wow im impressed! Yes that was all me. Speaking of which I wish the U.S. version of the Grand Cherokee had the power folding mirrors. Not required, but cool nonetheless. Believe it or not there are several others cars I have owned since those as well. I buy used and try to get the best prices possible. enjoy them for however long, then take my time and sell them right. I have actually done very good considering the economy. The latest was a 2006 C6 Z06 Corvette. Bought it used from original owner with 7,300 miles for $40,500, sold 7 months later for $44,500 to a guy near Denver. BTW that was an amazing car!!! As for the 08 red rock. I bought that for $30,000 used back when the gas prices were ridiculously high and sold for $32,000 to a young guy in my same town. Im surprised to see the SRT8's are holding their value now. You cant touch an 08 for low 30's it seems now.
As for the new Overland, like I said im planning on keeping this one for a long time. Since I bought this one new there is no chance of turning around and selling it for equal or greater. Im in this one for the long run lol. When im done with it I think the wife would love to have it.
So since I have the order form for my Jeep where do I start to be able to track it? I think I saw something about donating to this site and getting full tracking benefits. Sign me up!! I have my VON number I dont know if that means anything.
EDIT: ahh n/m I found the sticky and I paid my dues. Awesome!!! Sooo glad I found this site!
Thanks,
James
Since I ordered basically the same Overland as Nbtstatic I have been checking out his pictures a lot. Hopefully he doesnt mind but I did a real quick photoshop of one of his pictures (my favorite one). I added front window tint to match the rears which is one of the first things I would do. I also did a very slight drop to show it sitting at the "park" setting. Man this thing is SICK!!
Yeah im excited lol
I favor the Mineral Gray with the Saddle however I didn't want to wait so I got the black interior. The frost beige is too light. I really like the saddle although I haven't seen one in person. I think the best color is in the Laredo which is the medium Gray...just my opinion.
Yeah you really cant go wrong with either. I already ordered my dark charcoal with beige interior. I have always loved the light interiors. Yes its easier to get dirty and shows everything but thats not an issue for me since im super anal about stuff and detail all the time.
This other dealership I was dealing with actually called me today saying they just got in a mineral gray overland with saddle interior and adaptive cruise control. Its not an ordered sold car and is for sale. Its unfortunate that that dealership will not go below $43,500 otherwise I would be tempted. I got mine for $41,225. I will be happy with what I got and one benefit that I like is it wont be such an early built car. All the ones sold already or showing up at dealers were likely built in 2010 and are relatively early built cars. I like to get one from a little later in the year.
I'm in the western suburbs of Chicago - what dealer did you work with to get that price? I'm looking at buying an Overland in a few months - probably will order. Were you happy with your sales person? Would you recommend him/her? Thanks!
I did a lot of research, emailing, test drives and hopefully all my work can make your buying process as simple as going in and ordering with no work required Yes I was overall happy with the dealership so far and I would recommend using them again. The dealer was Tyson Motors (chrysler dodge jeep) in Shorewood, IL which is under 2 miles from my house in Plainfield. Wouldnt be too bad of a drive from the west burbs you can either take rt59 all the way down or I55. Its at I55 and Jefferson and only a half mile east of rt59 and Jefferson. My salesmen name was Nathan and he was nice and not pushy like your typical salesman.
The original deal I negotiated all by email before ever stepping foot into the dealer was $41,700. Once at the dealer to order I worked them down to a final price of $41,225+ttl no trade. They took a $250 deposit which I thought was also reasonable. That was the best deal I could get in the entire Chicago area. Unless something changes in a few months dont bother with Naperville Jeep, they would not budge under $43,500 and even told me Tyson Motors was lying and there is no way they could let a new Overland go for right near $41. I said ok watch me....and I did. I understand dealerships need to make money as well, but I gotta do whats best for me to.
Anyway, let me know if I can be of any furthur assistance to you.
P.S. Mancari's in Oak Lawn was the other dealership willing to get into the $41's, but Tyson said they would beat their price. That and along with Tyson being 5 minutes from my house it was a no brainer. Both are high volume large dealers.
2nd P.S. One last thing. I originally wasnt going to order until spring either until I found out how long its taking some guys to get an ordered Overland. I wont have mine until spring time when I was originally looking to buy anyway. So I figured might as well order it now to get it when I wanted it. Otherwise had I waited till spring to order it would have been more towards the end of summer to get it and I didnt want that. I wanted an entire spring and summer to enjoy my brand new Overland and keep it nice and shiny. No payments, downpayments or anything obviously until you take delivery except for small deposit.
Blacks always cool but didnt want that. I ordered the dark charcoal with beige interior. In certain light dark charcoal looks almost black anyway so it's kind of best of both worlds in a way. One other reason I opted for something else is black is the most produced. So when these WK2's start getting super common I'm not going to see my exact car at every stop light.
Thanks, James for the thorough info. I had stopped by Naperville Jeep a few months ago just looking, and I knew right then I probably wouldn't be working with them. I grew up in Plainfield, so I know exactly where Tyson is. Good info on how long the order process takes for the Overland too. I was thinking of ordering with the idea of getting the Jeep in late April/early May. Sounds like I need to get in there and place the order. Appreciate the advice!!
