New owner - 2015 JGC Overland V8!

Picked up my new 2015 Brilliant Black Overland this past weekend! It's a V8 4x4 with the technology package. I also had the dealership install the Mopar step bars and pedal covers. I was able to get a really good deal on them - was considering the sill plates as well to make it a dealer-intalled version of the chrome package but elected to save the $ for some slush mats and a roof rack.

I absolutely love it so far. I've been lurking here for a while researching the purchase, eventually deciding on the V8 Overland. As with many others I would have loved to have the Summit features (H/K audio, front parking sensors, adaptive headlights, etc) but really much preferred the looks of the Overland and that outweighed the decision. Too bad, I woujld have given Jeep plenty of cash for that H/K setup!

This car is a big change for me, my previous vehicles were all German sedans and SUV's (X5, 2 Audi S4's, a 330i). All of those were extremely reliable and great cars but I was looking to save a few $, buy American, and try something new.

Thanks for all the help on this forum - as a lurker I gained plenty of knowledge but hope to contribute more in the future. Until then a couple of comments/questions:

- I like the comfort entry seat/steering wheel but I think it's designed for someone much, much taller. Anyway to set it up to just raise the wheel? I'm 5' 10" and feel like I'm climbing out of the back seat via the front door when it does it's thing.

- I'd been having a lot of buffering problems with UConnect/Slacker/iPhone (iOS 8), but then this morning it all worked perfect. I'll have to check my software version when I get a chance, but is this common? I may just use a straight bluetooth connection.

- Love the V8 sound and power! I don't tow, don't haul much stuff, and really only use it to drive to work and around town but hey, I'm used to powerful engines so it was a relatively easy choice. I drove both and was pleasantly surprised by the V6 but was afraid I'd regret the choice down the road. For a few bucks more I think it's worth it. At least it takes regular gas and gas prices have dropped quite a bit (for now!)

- Love the vented seats and leather feel. It actually feels so much nicer than the BMW leather in my last couple of cars. Hopefully it holds up.

- I'm actually glad the tech package doesn't include any lane departure warning system. My wifes car has that along with ACC and blind spot warning, and of the 3 systems that's my least favorite. ACC in the stop and go traffic on my commute is awesome though - I don't think I'll ever get a car without it.

- I do like how BMW and Audi let a passenger interact with their nav systems while driving. I wish other companies (like Jeep and M-B) that insist on disabling it come up with a passenger mode of some sort - weight on the seat, etc. It's frustrating that everyone gets locked out. Especially because I've never really liked voice control.

- Glad I didn't opt for the identical model at my dealership that had a rear Blu-Ray system. I didn't want to lose the center console storage, it took up rear seat space, and it's much too expensive compared to even buying a dedicated iPad. I know iPads arent as easy or convenient, but considering most of our media is via A/V files now vs. printed DVDs it makes so much more sense.

- I'm really looking forward to exercising its all weather capabilities in the future. We just moved to a colder climate from the South.

- I really like the customizability of nearly everything in the car. BMW and Audi are relatively restrictive on what you can change, although both have ways of coding in options available in the rest of the world (ROW). Is there anything like this for our car, ie disabling the winking DRLs when turn signals are on? I've read a little about the Lockpicks but that's all I've really seen.

Sorry this is long for a 1st/2nd post. I just wanted to thank everyone for their indirect assistance as well as let you know a few of my thoughts for the first 50 miles or so. Once I get permission to upload I'll post a few pictures.

Jim

Jim,

If you don't mind...please elaborate on what you can/can't do with the Nav system while driving. I just drove a friend's Lexus that would not allow Nav inputs once the car was in Drive. Reeeeally do not care for that. Thanks in advance.

That's done for liability reasons. It's a pretty sure bet that someone would sue the manufacturer for allowing them to use these systems after getting in an accident while being distracted by doing so. Sad, but true.

Federal regulations state that no light may be brighter than the turn signals while they are active during daylight (no headlamps on). Is unlikely anyone would make commercially available such a customization for a street car as you are technically not street-legal if you make such a change.

Black interior. I really like how the headliner is black is well - you don't see that often.

From my little experience thus far, entering addresses or new destinations is verboten. Also, other strange things like resetting the driver seat memory. However, I'm not restricted from drilling down into the settings menu. That could be quite distracting, a lot more than typing in a 3 letter airport code!

Like other cars (Lexus I'm sure), the manufacturers answer is to use voice control. However I've never been a big fan. I have no accent whatsoever but my repeated requests to navigate me to Reagan National Airport resulted in different destinations in Oregon and Texas. Supposedly I need to set my region up. I'm away from the car now but will report back when I get home.

I also understand this limitation can be bypassed via the "lockpick" for uconnect.

Yup, I'm a Strike Eagle pilot. I just left SJ a month ago for a non-flying staff tour - my first extended non flying assignment in 18 years. If I used emoticons I'd put the one up that shows me banging my head against a brick wall.

I get the liability piece, but I was simply stating I prefer other manufacturers solutions - using single knob controls vs touchscreens. Not all companies prohibit interactions while driving. Those that allow it employ the rotating knobs.

And yes, I also know the regs that require the winking mechanism of the DRLs. My Audi did the same thing. However, the ROW doesn't prohibit it and there was a simple method to code Audis to stop the winking. Big deal? No. Cool and fun thing to do? Yes. And I challenge you to a) find a single LEO that knows about that regulation, and b) find me a single accident that was caused by a light setup such as this. Again, I was just musing about coding options for our car beyond lockpicks. It's documented fact that our auto lighting regulations are hopelessly outdated. Check out some of the things Mercedes headlights can do overseas but are prohibited over here. It's too bad.

Oh I know it's different in other countries. As for law enforcement--you probably won't get pulled over. Unless you're the lucky one who catches an officer in need of something to do

Accidents? Well...if all accidents were very rigorously studied you could look for that. In actuality, for the GC, the shape and proximity of the DRL setup could in fact cause you to "miss" a turn signal--they tend to draw attention away from the turn signal. Remember--many drivers aren't exactly throwing their full cognitive attention out there. That's why you get these bizarre accidents where people drive into the back of a police cruiser with its lights on over in the shoulder. Drivers who are not completely "with it" become hypnotized to an extent--and it becomes a game of "follow the pretty lights." In fact, the "wink", as it's happening, draws attention to the change taking place. So personally, in the US, I agree with the DRL regs and the "winking." YMMV.

Besides--I'm former Naval Aviation myself. I'll never agree with you anyway on principle
