I will believe you when you show the PICTURES, we ALL want to see the pictures and heck a video of you mudslinging your mall crawler would really be awesome too! Before you wash it.

If you do I contend you are the exception not the rule !

They usually see most of their "dings & scratches" from irate mall maggots near the movie theater, ha ha!

If you are interested in seeing who takes their Jeeps off road, you'll have to get out there. You can't count them while sitting at the mall.

Re: New Summit for New York Auto Show

I was just reading the online Car and Driver. It says the new Summit is now standard all wheel drive like the SRT. Do I now have to buy a Overland to get two wheel drive ? It's not unexpected though. More Luxury , less off road utility . What information am I missing?

Re: New Summit for New York Auto Show

Well I had a 4Runner that was 4WD but 97% of the time I didn't need it. I drove around in two wheel drive . Going to all wheel drive mean it's always engaged . Which is fine if you lease a vehicle . Long term not so much. Do people with 4 wheel drive keep it in engaged all the time? Of course not, I like being able to give it rest when not needed.

To be honest I need the ground clearance on my vehicle the most. The sandy two track with tree roots back to the cabin is the problem . The all wheel drive would not be a deal breaker for me.

Re: New Summit for New York Auto Show

Most full time 4wd systems are designed quite different from part time systems. They can operate for over 200k miles without any problems. Yes, there is probably a marginal mpg loss with a full time system, but if you can afford a $40k+ vehicle, you probably aren't too concerned with a few mpg's

Re: New Summit for New York Auto Show

The 4WD in the JGC is designed to function full time without the down-sides of older 4WD types that you had to (and could) disengage for "normal" driving. In the JGC, you can't "turn off" the 4WD, but it's not "locked up" like older systems and is somewhat free-wheeling. It's also an intelligent 4WD system and with the SelectTerrain feature, the balance of power transfer can be varied to the axels. For example, Sport Mode puts more of the power on the rear axel than the front and other modes are more balanced.

There's no reason that any JGC cannot do some level of off-road...it's not about "mudslinging". I really don't understand why you cannot accept that folks who have very nicely appointed JGCs do occasionally go off-road and quite successfully. Case in point. Summit with 20s aired down on a beach with 8"+ of very soft sand. Ran in "Sand Mode" in OR-II with zero issues. With four adult-sized folks inside and a variety of beach "luggage".

And then there are the muddy parking lots with 5000+ lbs of horse trailer and trailer behind it.

All off road isn't Moab...

Modern AWD and 4WD systems aren't "on or off" like you are implying. They're almost always dynamic systems that operator according to road conditions when in the normal automatic mode. This isn't like your 4Runner that engages into a high or low 4WD that are on or off.

In the case of AWD, under normal road conditions, the vehicle operates roughly like a 2WD vehicle. The difference is, things like cornering, braking or heavy acceleration will activate the system to assist in keeping the vehicle under control. When encountering slippery conditions, the system will fully activate to provide more traction by sending power to wheels that are not slipping.

In the case of 4WD, you also gain manually engaged modes that allow the differentials to lock for off road traction. Systems like those in the Jeep also have a low range mode that provides more low speed torque for crawling over obstacles without wheel spin. Even those are somewhat dynamic according to the traction needs.

Leaving either system in Auto mode allows it to perform roughly like a 2WD vehicle under normal dry pavement conditions when traveling at cruising speeds.

Re: New Summit for New York Auto Show

I like it, but those luxury car buyers are going to be FURIOUS when they first have to deal with a Jeep dealer. I think Jeep product managers need to go visit a few Audi/Lexus dealers and then a few Jeep dealers on a given day. If you're playing in the $50k+ market (and they are!) they need to start offering comparable service.
