New Summit with Glass Problems

When we picked up our new Summit it was late in the evening. Got home and noticed this hazing and heavy duty water stains. Next morning in the sun all of the windows had this swirl like - sparkle like reflections when in the sun. They all looked like they were dirty. Nothing would clean them. Dealer said bring it back and they would clean them with a special acid process. They cleaned them and they looked better. Then we had several days of storms.Had the rig washed this morning all the imperfections are back. It is really bad on a clear day. The car wash guys tried and tried to clean the windows - they still look bad. Nothing helps, glass cleaner, window stain cleaners, wax - nothing does it. They really look bad especially in the direct sun. It is going back to the dealer first thing Monday morning. Anyone else had an issue like this? Funny thing this Jeep had a sticker on it stating that the car was pulled off the line for quality checks and thus had some miles on it. New - $60K Jeep - They will be fixing this. I'm worried that replacing all the windows will result in additional inflicted issues .

Ideas?

Re: New Summit with Glass Problems

Damn sorry you have to deal with these issues on a brand new vehicle. never heard of such an issue. These blemishes are not on the paint whatsoever?
My dad recently purchased a new Cadillac ATS and he got home and there are minor clearcoat defects on all the top body panels (hood, roof, trunk). Didn't see them until he got it home in the garage under his fluorescent lights. Dealer cut him a check for what a body shop quoted to fix it which would have more or less been a complete repaint. He definitely did not want a brand new car repainted so he took the check for a few grand and he is happy.

In your case sounds like the stained Windows might be more of an issue that needs to be fixed. Hopefully it's taken care of without too much trouble for you.

Paint and chrome look good - it is a glass issue. The glass feels smooth to the touch and looks fime till you are in direct sunlight. I did read on a detailing site that there are sometimes issues with glass up in Oregon and Washington. Some recommend using Meguries # 04 to cleand them. But if you look at the photos this almost seems like it's under the laminate.

Re: New Summit with Glass Problems

I am COMPLETELY out of my league here....and only venturing in some wild-ass speculation...so please do not flame me if this is an ignorant (because I already know that it is...hahaha)

You said its smooth to the touch....I would try a razor blade. See if that comes up with anything. If not, then the irregularity is presumably below the surface.

Do you notice the same irregularity on more than one window?

Is the irregularity visible in the REAR glass>

I ask because you said its a Summit. The 15 Summit has special acoustic glass in the windshield and the glass for the front doors, but I do not think the rear glass is acoustic.

If you see the irregularities in the acoustic glass...but not in the non-acoustic glass....differential diagnosis....irregularity is in the acoustic laminate layer inside the window...nothing you can do but have the dealership replace the effected windows.

Again...pure speculation.

Re: New Summit with Glass Problems

Don't see anything like that on my Summit.. And my Summit does have its share of imperfections. (But still overall happy with it) . I would be fearful to swap them all out as well. Do all of your windows have the "Mopar" label in the bottom corner?

Re: New Summit with Glass Problems

I have a 2014 Summit and several months ago something got on my passenger side door windows. I tried several kinds of window sprays and vehicle soaps but nothing would get the spots/film off. I then went and bought some Meguiar's detail spray and clay bar and sprayed down the windows liberally and used the clay on them. To my surprise whatever was on my windows that stained them came right off and they have been perfect ever since. Give some clay and detail spray a try and see if that helps.

Re: New Summit with Glass Problems

find the finest grade steel wool you can find and some stoners invisible glass. Try just a very small area in the corner. Soak it will the stoners and rub it with the fine grade steel wool. Also try a fine grade clay bar. Spray the window with detail spray and then rub with the clay bar. You can get all this stuff at any auto parts store. They sell clay bar kits.

Re: New Summit with Glass Problems

I have clay barred my windows with excellent results. Be sure to spray the liquid liberally before claying. Oh, and if you decide to do a spray painting project in your garage, move your cars outside first!
