Exclamation New technique makes it easy to break in and steal GC

There were news story past two nights about how high end cars are being stolen in my area. Apparently the passive keyless entry and start button allows thieves with the right technology to open the doors as easily as having the key fob with them.

From what I researched, they are using low frequency amplifiers they hold near your car door to project the handshake the cars send out when you touch the door handle to a much further distance. Maybe as far as 300 feet. Your key fob in your house, or in your pocket in the restaurant receives the signal and sends back the unlock signal as if you pressed the unlock button. If your car is within receiving distance, it unlocks the door. No alarm because the car thinks it was unlocked legally.

I haven't figured out how we would counter it besides taking the batteries out of your fob any time you are not using it.

Any one else hear about this?

You can turn off the passive entry in the settings. Sounds like we need to put or keys in metal boxes until we are ready to go somewhere.

Yeah. Some kind of Faraday cage to keep your keys in at home.

I tried the sleeve that my EZ Pass came in to see if it would block the signal from the car, but it didn't.

Cool! I've been looking to get a second GC on the cheap....will stop by my local dealership and get an SRT. I'll just hang around after a test drive so the fob is nearby and off I go!

Meanwhile, I'll keep my current GC's fob under my tin foil hat!

LOL

Thanks for the info....interesting. There may be a software solution to this though...

Re: New technique makes it easy to break in and steal GC

There is a thread on here somewhere about it, included a few news reports via YouTube we posted.
It also mentions which makes/models are easiest I think.

Re: New technique makes it easy to break in and steal GC

From what I read it allows getting in the vehicle but not stealing.

The mechanism for entry or even remote start are completely independent from being able to drive it.

And getting into cars has never been all that difficult.

So turning off passive entry only allows opening via key and pushing the open button on remote?

Or, you can simply do the good, old "key-fob"-switch....

That's my guess. Easy enough to test. I'm sure it won't be long before passive entry is removed as a feature to fix the problem.

Entry is one thing, but AFAIK, you need very close proximity of the fob to be able to actually start the vehicle...including if it was "started" with remote start which does turn on the engine, etc., but it's not officially "started" without that button push with the brake pedal depressed while the fob is in attendance. I see this as more of a personal property and damage threat.

That's what I was saying a few posts back.
It's completely different technology.
