New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

Hello everyone, I'll try and keep this short and to the point... I am currently looking at grand cherokees from 2011-2014 or so depending on price. What i would like to know is what model year should i really be looking at as far as repairs/breakage goes.. I currently have a 2001 Trans am and had my share of breakage (a lot of which i did, its a sports car you're going to race it lol) but anyway i am looking at the v8 hemi cherokee, any issues with those? I know i can get a few mpg with the v6 and this will be my main car but i dont drive that far ( trans am was my only car since 2000 and has 92k on it,bought new)
Anyway im looking for a optioned out vehicle like the limited but also thought of the overland. I am a bit nervous of the air ride and what it costs when it breaks. Dont really need that option but it is nice to have. How do you all feel about it? Should i worry about breakage and cost to fix vs not having it. A limited would do me fine with all other options but if the air ride is worth it and not too many issues with it i wouldnt mind having it..

Buying anything is a crapshoot, especially used. I wouldn't be too concerned about breakage... that's what extended warranties are for.

I haven't had any issues with my QL but if something breaks it won't be cheap. Nothing is for that matter.

You mentioned the Limited twice. It's perfectly adequate and cheaper than an Overland.

Re: New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

The Limited is not the "optioned out" Grand Cherokee. The Overland and even more so the Summit is. Limited models can be nicely equipped, but won't have everything that the higher models have.
11-13 is the older style WK2 and 14+ is the refreshed version with completely new interior and updated exterior.
They are all solid vehicles, but if I had to choose which WK2 I would be hesitant on, it's the early build 2014's and even more specifically the V6 models.
If price is a large factor then 11-13 Limited/Overland/Summit models will for sure be significantly cheaper than the newer 14+ models. If you have the funds to go all out then without a doubt go for the 14+ Overland or Summit...just my opinion, hope this helps.

Re: New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

Well i was just saying an optioned out limited would be all i needed or should i say wanted... I know the overland and more so the summit (gross interior lol) is the top of the line but the extras in those i could live without. There is a 2011 overland that has everything i want for less than 23,500 with 60k on it, i just see since the 2011 is the year they changed a lot of things they also seem to have the most issues/repairs... That is understandable as any new model will have kinks and each year after that they tend to get worked out. Like you said a bunch of issues with the early 14's when they changed the style..

Re: New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

The Limited with the Lux II package is pretty much loaded. I think the '14 did add to the desirability of the GC. Since these vehicles have so much expensive technology, an extended service plan makes sense since you will obviously own it past the basic warranty.

That said, there's no reason to shy away from the Overland with QuadraLift. It can come in handy even if you don't go off road. The '14 and up models have not been reporting the number of issues as the older ones.

Have fun shopping!

Re: New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

Never ask a forum what you should buy, only you can answer that one. Everyone here will disagree with each other until they're out of breath over what's best.

As for opinions, I think every year has it's share of pro's and con's. This forum is loaded with people that love their Jeep and plenty that hate their Jeep. You'll get lemons regardless of year. Pick your price point, what options are important to you and go test drive some.

My personal Jeep is a 13 GC Limited, probably pretty close to what you're looking for. Has QL and the Hemi and has had exactly zero problems in 2 and a half+ years. Others in every year haven't been as lucky and have let everyone that will listen know about it.

Read peoples opinions but get what YOU want, don't worry so much about a few peoples horror stories.

Re: New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

Well i understand i get what i want but im not asking if i should buy a trans am or a mustang lol... If you asked me what year trans am from 98-02 to look at i could tell you the 98 were the worst (first year for new style) 01 and 02 had may updates and improvements (not options) over the older ones.. Im not afraid of stupid things breaking like interior panels, power seat stops working and that sort of thing, i am more or less looking out for things like quadra lift breaking making it un drivable or transmission/motor problems.

I've seen people with new Jeeps of all years have problems almost immediately, just bad luck for them, but way more love their Jeep and have no issues at all. My Jeep has had no issues with QL/trans/motor and it likes to hang out with all the Wranglers in our Jeep club so it goes off road often. I've seen other Jeeps that have never driven a dirt road have the service suspension light on and never ending QL problems. I've been on here from day one of the WK2's and there's really no better year to have.

The 14+ has a lot of upgrades for sure but price will definitely be more. Are you looking for an off roader? commuter? grocery getter? Do you need or even want QL?

I think the early 11's and the early 14's are probably the most complained about since they were first one's off the line of their kind. Kind of the guinea pigs for the rest of us. The extended contracts are not too expensive and would give some peace of mind.

Re: New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

I have a '14 Limited V8 with QuadraDrive and Quadra Lift. No issues since new. The 8 speed auto is a nice upgrade, especially with the V8. An extended or lifetime warranty is worth considering with all the expensive technology, especially with the QL.

Re: New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

this is going to be my main car, i will still have my trans am for now and slowly re-do that vehicle. Do i need the ql , no not really. Some fishing spots i go to are off road and the extra height may help but really not needed. I see it as a feature that is cool to have/show off and its there if i do need it like if i tow a boat it will auto level. Main things i want are leather seats, heated/cooled seats, heated steering wheel, keyless entry/start and panoramic sunroof

I have all of the "main" things you want in my 2013 JGC Overland. I love everything about it. I did get the V8 and 2wd(no ql) . Love the 6 speed tranny and its manual-like shift feature.

Re: New to the board... What Grand Cherokee should i buy??

For whatever its worth, my 2013 JGC Ltd. v6 has been a great vehicle and running well at 62m miles and 2yrs. 9 mo. ownership. Its not the Hemi but has very sufficient power. I never have towed anything and never will. I has a hitch from the factory and is great to know I have it if needed. If you look at this forum you will notice probably the year with the LEAST problems is the 2013. I hope to own this car for a long time. Its very nice with almost no major problems. Good Luck on your purchase...
