X5>GC...but probably not 30k better. If money were equal I'd take an X5 everytime, and thats not a knock on the GC, everything just seems to work together a little more seamlessly on the X5, like when you get to get back on the gas midcorner its already in the right gear and theres no driveline hangups, just smooth power. Anyway the GC is way more robust and can actually do a little light offroading, which would just been kinda sad in any BMW.
I will have to disagree with your comment about the BMW being sad with "light off-roading". I have never felt the X5 being lacking when off of the pavement. Shall I give some examples:

X5 Posing (OK these are on-road):

OK, X5 doing a little work - no issues pulling this heavy-duty chipper thru the woods:

Yanking bushes out of the yard:

X5 pulling wakeboard boat out of woods after accidentally pushing it off the driveway and down a hill:

Because my lowered F150 (2-wheel drive couldn't do it):

One thing thru all of this discussion that I have forgotten to bring up is the safety of the X5 - something even more important than the sportiness. Here is a pic of my X5 after being rear-ended by an F150 - I was sitting still, the F150 was running about 45-55mph:

And the F150:

I have never felt "helpless" in the X.

I would hardly qualify a smooth, dry, dirt road as off-roading....

That is the woods in my backyard - no roads (comment above was "light" off-roading).

Just wanted to show that a BMW could be taken "off-road", even with 20's and high-perf tires.

I am not trying to argue here, just some people think because it is a BMW that it is not capable of doing anything but driving on pavement, so I am giving you a rare glimpse of one doing it!!

I don't call ventureing off the driveway and across the backyard off-roading in any way. 2 wheel drive versus 4 wheel drive in wet grass or leaves is no contest even if it's an all wheel drive mini-van.

Wow, give the guy a break! How many with that wheel/tire combo would head past the driveway?

Re: New x3 prices announced.... what a joke!!

Comparing the upcoming X3 to the current GC is, IMO, not even possible because BMW doesn't even give you the option to put in features of the GC into the X3. No ventilated seats, no radar cruise control etc.

A comparison between the X5 and GC would be a better match - but we all know what an X5 with comparable features would cost...

No worries - I am used to it. Have to defend the GC over on the X5 board too.

They are both great vehicles - hate to see anyone bashing either one of them.

Re: New x3 prices announced.... what a joke!!

As I think I've mentioned in another post, my GF just leased a 2011 X5 xdrive 35i. It's a sweet ride for sure and is definitely a little better put together overall than the GC. But for 20K more it should be. Having said that, the WK2 still holds its own very well in comparison.

Truthfully, I had never thought much of the X5 until I've had the chance to drive her old 2007 and the new 2011. But, I'm definitely more of a Jeep GC person, especially with the massive improvements that have come around with the WK2.
