Re: Newbie Question on Ordering

As mjw930 said, it's all about where you live and supply and demand. There are only three Jeep dealers within 50 miles of where I live and they cannot keep Overlands on the lot, so they are not going much below MSRP and no where close to invoice. If you can shop via phone and e-mail as JTS97Z28 suggested and are willing to go a longer distance to pick up the vehicle, as many on these forums are, then you will have a bigger pool of dealers to negotiate with and can get a better price. If you can find a dealer with one on the lot that is configured how you want it, then you will have a strong position and should be able to match the prices you see in this forum.

Re: Newbie Question on Ordering

BigBlue- You may want to ask the local dealers if they honor Affiliate Pricing such as Tread Lightly. If so, you can get a fair (but not perhaps best) price. It only costs $25 to join online and I got my letter from TL in just days. They may not bite, but it could be worth a shot.

Re: Newbie Question on Ordering

Thanks Sloan, I'll check my employer's discount purchase programs as well.

Yes, supply and demand certainly plays into it. As I said above, I understand the popularity of the Overland models, but wouldn't this be factored in at both Truecar and Edmunds, which both show prices paid of around $41k. Unless Truecar and Edmunds are not accurate. That's what I'm surprised by. I understand if they both show $43k and up, but that's not the case.

Truecar and Edmunds get their info from registration data where the sales price is logged. A lot can be going on when that number gets entered like adjustments for trades, additional discounting for backend incentives like the national marketing program that kicks back $1000 / vehicle if the dealership hits it numbers, FFP (affiliate), EP (Employee) and CDI (one time BIG discount employee code), Customer Loyalty ($750 - $1000) Military discount, etc. etc.......

Bottom line, it's rare you can actually walk out the door with a better price than Affiliate unless you are an employee. Remember, Affiliate pricing STARTS at 1% below invoice. Then you get ALL incentives including factory to dealer. Then you get to use any coupon ($500 - $1000) that you may have been mailed as a promotion. Then you pay NO additional fees (in FL that can be as much as $899).

Honestly, I don't care if someone was able to beat my price by a few hundred $$$. 1% under invoice with no fees and all incentives without having to do ANY negotiating means I simply go to whatever dealership either treats me well or has the car I want on the lot knowing exactly what I'm going to pay before I step foot on the lot. I've been using Affliate, Supplier (GM) and X Plan (Ford) programs for the last 15 years and I've had a lot of talks with GM's and dealer principles and they all agree there are no better deals leaving the lot than the negotiated programs but they try their best to make every customer feel like they got the best deal in the world

Redbolt - Check out Treadlightly.com. You should be able to get a great deal without leaving your town.

Re: Newbie Question on Ordering

My dealer wouldn't honor any Affiliates discounts for an ordered Overland. Edmunds and Truecar shows the average paid for an Overland to be MSRP in my area. Since I wanted ACC and OR-II, there was no option other than to order. I ended up negotiating $1500 off MSRP but it was like pulling teeth. The other two dealerships within 50 miles were no better and didn't even want to place an order for me. They wanted me to buy something less than I wanted off the lot. so if you can afford to look somewhere there is competition, you will be much better off.

Wow thats crazy I would have gladly bought a cheap plane ticket on southwest and bought from a dealer that was willing to deal. People on this site have easily been getting $4-$5K off MSRP. Thats significant.

Well that sucks!

Luckily around here every dealer was willing to order for an Affiliate deal but most won't dealer trade or go too far out of their way unless you are a returning customer. We aren't that huge an area, there's only 7 dealers within 50 miles but there are 7 pages of dealers within 200 and I'll gladly go 200 miles to save a few thousand and most dealers realize that.

Re: Newbie Question on Ordering

Hey BigBlue
Have you made any progress in the Overland search? I went in and ordered one on 1/11 and was able to get TL Pricing. MSRP was $46530 and Affiliate Price was $43207. According to the dealer, the price is locked in, and I will get any rebates/financing deals available at time of delivery. If you're interested in an out-of-state purchase, my dealer stated he could offer the same price. You would get whatever incentives were out there for NJ at delivery. (However, James in IL looks to have done even better than my TL thru his negotiating savvy.)

James, are you paying any fees besides sales tax, delivery and tags? I am being quoted a doc fee of $214 in addition to DMV charges.

Ron

Alright hope this helps clear things up. This is my actual signed buyers order. No DMV fee or whatever that is, and it seems that my doc fee is also cheaper.
My negotiated price is $41,225 and out the door after license, taxes, doc fee is $44,498.51.

Re: Newbie Question on Ordering

Thanks James - just what I was looking for. In other states I've lived in you paid state registration and titling fees to the Division of Motor Vehicles. Here in MI those fees go to the Secretary of State's office. I guess DMV isn't a universal term like WK2.

No I know what the department of motor vehicles is, what I meant was I dont know what the fee is specifically. Here in IL when you buy a vehicle from a dealership they pretty much do everything for you. You do not need to go to the DMV or pay any fee's directly to the DMV. if you buy private party for example then you do all the paperwork at the DMV such as paying the taxes, registration etc etc.

James
