Not sure I follow. Outside it basically is a Summit, and inside is mostly Overland with exception to trim color and full leather steering wheel.

Not quite. For starters, quality of leather is different (Natura Plus). Headliner is suede-like. Carpets are Berber. Quadra Drive II is on the Summit. And although you can get the HK sound system, it should have been standard equipment on the High Altitude. So yes, it should have been based on the Summit instead of an Overland from the get go.

This would be so disappointing to me if they did not have the HA this year...

I wonder if the new unconnect radio that will have CarPlay could be put into a 2016 HA?

Physically, that's likely possible. Cost wise...probably a "wow"...

That's exactly what I said...atleast I thought I did. It's basically a Summit on the outside and mostly Overland on the inside. I have owned both so I am familiar with the differences.
I think they did a pretty good job on it. If it was based off the Summit entirely it would have been much more expensive and most buyers of a High Altitude probably don't want to spend Summit prices plus the cost of HA package ontop of that.
The suede like headliner is a nice touch, but not a huge deal, the Berber is just the floor mats if I remember correctly, I run weathertechs regardless, quadra-drive 2...honestly I don't even know what that is or what it does. Both my Summit and HA go when I press the accelerator the same lol. The different leather is a little more minimal than you think. The only places I noticed different leather material between my Summit and HA were on places you don't necessarily even feel it. Headrests, and the upper portion of the seat backs. The rest of the leather looks and feels identical. At any rate, both great cars, but had the HA been based off Summit prices I probably wouldn't be in one right now. I wasn't going to spend 50k+ on a car.

Re: No 2017 High Altitude?

Well I agree the price would definitely be higher than the Summit pricing to start with and may be out of reach to others.

What throws me off is that my perception of an Overland is that this model is built more for off-road capability and the Summit is more for asphalt guys.

So for an HA to be an Overland...But I guess that's why they deleted the Overland badge than created a blacked out version which I'm glad it was in a way de-badged.

I can't figure out why they removed the Overland badge on the liftgate... after all, the HA is still an Overland. They at least should've had a High Altitude badge on it.

Overall, I think the HA is the best of all the trim levels as far as looks and features go.

I also wish they had some kind of HA badge on the back.

There is an Altitude badge available but it looks really plain. I was toying with the idea of looking into having one made... something like my sig pic. I've been so busy I just haven't had the time.

All of the JGC trim levels/special editions have the exact same off-road capability if equipped identically. The differences are how they are marketed. A Summit or HA (the latter "based" on an Overland) will do the job, but because of the front and rear fascia differences for street-appearance, there may be less clearance in certain situations. And you might want to install things like skids, tow hooks (more involved due to fascia) and appropriate wheels/tires. Otherwise...they are "built" the same. Same suspensions, power train, etc. All else is cosmetics.
