I don't think any of us think it sucks....I'm sure its VERY good... BUT its NOT quadra drive. The engineers stated it as delicately as they could. If you have enough brains to read between the lines you can clearly see that they say they left performance on the table...... Allow me translate the above quote:

Like you many of the engineers didn't want to see us short change the WK2 on a front LSD. We had many meetings about this but the decision came down from the top and you all know sh!t rolls down hill. We were forced to reduce complexity and cost while improving mileage. It sucks that we has to sacrifice the front LSD to make a tree hugger happy but we did the best we could with what they signed off on and it should be plenty for 99% of the folks that spend $40k on this rig. It is what it is.

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

That being said .... I think its sad that they added radar controlled cruise control and air suspension but left what is possibly one of the most important features out of the vehicle.

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

my ARgUMENT is this....NONE of you guys KNOW how good it is BECAUSE......you've NEVER driven it.....

It COULD be better than the elsd? Right?

and dont take what Im saying wrong...I could care less if it has elsd. Im not gonna be crawling rocks in this thing. I just dont understand your arguments when you have NO IDEA if its not as good as the ELSD. Ive driven it on the highway and it is just as good on the street....so for me...its as good.

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

I'm a stickler not a hater. Truth is I'll probably buy one. I'm sure it's superior to my WJ QD and it is drop dead sexy.

My issue is that I really thought they had nailed the QD2 on the WK1.
I'm irritated that they short changed the WK2 QD. I tend to avoid first year run vehicles so I hoping that the 2012 will have a front LSD.

Now, that's a better way of stating it! I too enjoy knowing that I can go through some nasty stuff because I have QD in my WJ, as opposed to the QT system I had in the ZJ. But, as stated, know one really has tried out this QD system, side by side with the older one, to know what the differences may be. When they went to the "trail rated" thing, I can only assume that the engineers are telling the truth about the capability of the latest iteration of QD in this Jeep...I don't think they would have produced a system that wasn't there for us.

I know this thread is a bit old, and the engineer chat is but a memory, but when I read that thread this was my first thought as well. If whatever system they are using in the front is "better" than the ELSD setup, why didn't they apply it to the rear as well? I'm no engineer, but I wish someone would have asked this during the chat. I wasn't able to participate.

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

I finally got my Overland and the factory build sheet for it. It says: DS7S - Conventional Differential Frt Axle

I rather expected that, after reading what the Jeep engineers said in the chat session:

JeepEngineer3: Now...the discussion of the ELSD on the front was a very lengthily internal Jeep team discussion early in the program. We found in our testing that the better BLD software performance, slightly bigger brakes, improved fuel efficiency/reduced friction, and new T-case torque transfer out-weighed the potential front ELSD benefit. Bottom line, we believe the off-road and on-road performances are maximized with our 2011 system.

JeepEngineer2: The front ELSD was not needed to make this new Jeep the most capable Grand Cherokee yet. The chassis electronics (esp, abs, traction control) systems are soo fast now that we were able to get amazing traction without a front ELSD. I can tell you from experience (Moab ect.) this Jeep will go anywhere.

They seem to believe that the traction control system is now fast enough to synchronize the front wheel speeds by rapid brake pulsing on the airborne or slipping wheel, thereby giving the appearance of a locked diff. But this does not maximize (Engineer3) the performance, as only half the available torque will thereby be going to the ground traction wheel. Maybe this can be overcome by more throttle, but one hopes the pulsing brake can take the heat during prolonged rock crawling. (If that open diff is indeed conventional, maybe an aftermarket locker would fit?)

IMHO, the 2011 JGC QDII system is a customer test program. I can imagine the 2012 Jeep having either no or two ELSDs.

Re: No front ELSD for QD II?

In the grand cherokee chat yesterday, this question was brought up again, too.. here's what they answered.

Quote:
With regard to front ELSD, we developed our Quadra-Drive II system with a variable t-case, rear ELSD, better BLD performance and larger brakes to provide better traction performance than our prior system with ELSD.
Quote:
The combination of the variable T-case, air suspension, ELSD, and BLD's allowed us to optimize traction performance and ground clearance. We conducted significant tests (in all environments) comparing the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee to prior models to ensure we delivered.
