Re: No GC for me.

Our 2011 Outback is a wonderful vehicle and very capable. But it's not in the same class as my 2012 JGC, IMHO, when it comes to "heavy" needs...and adding on to kkreit01's comment...I kinda thing that the Jeep will go well beyond a Forester or Outback in that respect.

I don't want the V8 or the diesel for my own reasons. I'd be willing to pay for leather, a sunroof, or any amount of other crap I don't want if I could get the locker and the V6. But it's not to be.

I'll probably go with another Subaru, as boring as they are. The two speed transfer case and Select-Trac are a scosh better but it's the locker that makes the difference between getting stuck and coming home. I'm out in the boonies by myself most of the time, spending $40K for an almost good enough off road truck just sucks donkey d****, IMHO.

Thumbs down to Jeep for their marketing stupidity. But thumbs up to the Jeep Garage forum, it's a great source of good info, and I thank everyone who contributes,

Truly blue in the far pacific.

Your not buying it because they put the same engine in the charger?? Why do I think you had no intention of buying a GC?

Oh now be kind. Subarus are reasonably capable little critters.

Its the Subaru DRIVERS that put them in the mountain ditches or insist on driving 10mph below the speed limit on mountain roads.

Buy the Jeep, stick a donkey and a harness in it when you are in the boondocks. Use the donkey to pull it out of the muck.

In truth, it would be more likely the donkey that gets stuck... Hee Hawww

Re: No GC for me.

I do a lot of sand driving in my GC.
I have the rear elsd in my jeep, but am pretty convinced that 99% of the time it is not needed. However, I often take my young children out with me and I'm glad to have the elsd even if it is just for peace of mind. As far as I understand things the elsd is quicker to react than the brake traction control, and once it is locked there's no braking required.

This video is of an old commander, but the elsd is the same as the wk2 (though it had one in the front also).

Found this Video of a Quadra-Trac II (i.e. no locks)

Pretty impressive.

Re: No GC for me.

Some good comments and things to think about, thanks. Agreed that QTI is about a Subaru and QTII would take you farther. But that video, and others on the page, support my position, I think. As I understand it lockers can transfer more torque to the wheel with traction than the ABS/braking scheme can.

It is peace of mind, to some degree, and the "better to have it and not need it than..." thing. And partly that my favorite car saying is "buckle up, I want to try something".

It's been a long time since I got excited about a drive train. Maybe I'll buy the Charger and trailer the donkey to the boonies, LOL.

ummmm.... careful there.... Are you rock crawling and need torque to wrench the front end out of a gully?

If you get stuck in the general out of the way areas the Electronic traction control systems and ABS actuators will not only transfer some torque to the wheel with "more" traction but will make sure it does not spin. Lockers cannot do this by themselves.

I like Subarus but not for what you are comparing.

If that's the case why are you suggesting that you should "just get another Subaru"?

Here is a good blog on BLD

Re: No GC for me.

No matter how good the brake control is, for me Jeep killed the ESD for cost savings. It is closer now to Hyundai SantaFe or else. Well not really, SantaFe is still as twice as cheeper...The problem is that brake control is pulsing. It is quick but still pulsing and the wheel with traction gets more torque when ABS applied. Next moment when ABS is released the wheel with traction gets the same torque like the wheel spinning (almost nothing) because the open diferential. End result is I feel like loosing the momentum when going up hills during my test drive last winter.
With my WJ with QD I feel like the bunny - keep going and going even with old tires. No wonder why a lot of new WK2 owners do not like stock tires. It is not the tires guys....
The problem I have is that my WJ is getting old and need upgrade. Getting WK2 looks like step down for me. Not sure what I'm going to do also......
