While I have a GC LTD with remote start and heated seats, I have no heated steering wheel. So to paraphrase the old saying "I cried for not having shoes till I saw a man with no legs"? ... I cried because I had no heated steering wheel, until I met a Jeep GC owner with no heated seats!
I never even heard of a heated steering wheel until about a year ago when I was shopping for my wife's car. It then became a "must have" and we refused to look at vehicles without it.
I was talking to a guy at work today and he knows a guy with a Mercedes with a heated gearshift/knob. Can't remember what type of Mercedes or if he said. First I've heard of it.
I think BMW was doing that on the 5s awhile ago. My wife has a heated steering wheel on her 328 and I like it. (My Limited doesn't have one) Personally I'd like a heated windshield. Or at a minimum, the wiper rest area (my Ridgeline had that).
I had a 1989 Mercury Sable with a heated windshield that had a gold tint when viewed from the outside. It worked great for a few winters and then stopped working. There was a problem with the connection to the windshield and after numerous freeze/thaws, the connector points broke.
It was also almost impossible to find the same replacement windshield if it cracked or was broken.
I dont understand why more manufacturers dont do like Subaru. For atleast the last 5 years Subarus have had defroster lines on the windshield in the wiper rest area. It makes total sense and Im shocked more havent caught on. Seems like a much better idean than heated blades
My son is being taught how to drive by a professional, but I still take him driving. I just about fell out of the truck laughing when we got in the truck, and he said " The Steering Wheel is cold ".
Heated steering wheels, heated seats, heated shifting knobs,... All of this discussion sounds so strange from a southwesterner's vantage. Probably like air conditioning to an Alaskan.
That made me think about this weekend. As we were leaving the slopes, my husband and I were grumbling about the 9degree weather and our cold rears from the ski lift. Luckily the remote start has decent range and the heated seats were nice and toasty by the time we got to the Jeep and got the gear stowed. Heated seats and steering wheels are those additions once you have them, you dont ever want to go back to a vehicle without!
The first time I had a heated steering wheel was my '05 X5 and missed it until I got my WK2 and 300. Such a nice feature to have, don't miss it until you don't have it. As mentioned earlier, heated/cooled cup holders are nice too.
I still drive with one hand on the steering wheel and one on the shifter so I could see the benefit of the heated shifter. Habit from driving a manual 5-speed for my first car.
Ive gotten cracked windshields before, and for that matter is why I have glass coverage on my insurance policy. The glass cracks, they replace it no cost to me.
