Re: Noise in "Snow" mode

It seems like there is some proactive locking of the front the front diff in snow mode. I've noticed when starting out and making a sharp turn there a little bit of hop/movement typical to what you'd feel when you put a 2wd vehicle into 4wd and take a sharp turn (aka, not meant to be in 4wd except on slippery surfaces, although this is much milder).

That tells me that at low speed with only semi-covered or wet surface you might feel some binding in the drive train as a result of the wheels traveling at different speeds and snow mode changing how it sends power/handles the diff, although I am not sure if that's your situation..

I don't actually know what snow mode changes in the drive train so I am just making some assumptions here.

Snow mode locks 50/50 torque front and rear. The noise you hear is most likely Brake Traction Control catching your spinning wheel thus forcing the torque to the other wheel. The transmission also starts in 2nd gear from a stop to lessen wheel spin.

Re: Noise in "Snow" mode

What berk483 said. I noticed that too a week ago when I went skiing and there was lots of snow in the parking lot. I hear it especially when turning. You will hear the same noise when you hit your brakes hard in snow causing ABS to go nuts.

Cheers,
-A

Is this just the vehicles drivetrain reacting to the equalled out torque between front and rear? Its exactly the same noise and feel I got in my ram when i went from 2wd to 4wd. Tires and suspension components and axles look good. Im leaning towards its just natural from the torque values as each other mode is ok but the other modes take some of the torque off the front differential. Also note this is QT2 and no Elsd or QL.
At what speed are you engaging snow mode? When you turn the dial through the sand mode to get to snow mode it turns off the traction control in sand mode. If the vehicle is moving and the road is slippery then I would pass through the sand mode as quickly as you can as to not give it a chance to turn off the traction control. You could have been feeling/hearing the traction control going off/on.

When you move that dial to change modes just like when you shift a 2WD into 4WD (in a shift on the fly truck) you should let off the gas if you’re moving so there's no tension on the drive train. I don’t think this is a requirement in the JGC like it is in pick-up trucks shifting in and out of 4WD...But it definitely can’t hurt.
