As a former valet driver in college, I have to say not all drivers are in on this scam.
Just curious did the valets lock your keys and others into a key box? We alway had a locked box that stores the keys on a hook and automatically locked once it shut.
I will say that some valets drivers are shady and in my exp I favor not to use the service whenever possible.
Edit- sorry to hear about your loss, hopefully everything works out for you.
