I doubt that just letting the idle pull him out of the hole would have worked. You can obviously tell that his undercarriage was hitting the snow. I agree that a more gentle touch of the right peddle would have helped, but no gas at all, unless it was a V-12 diesel

Am I the only one to notice that he had no problem going 'down' (backwards) the street?

Gee, you can backup, but you can't go forward UP a hill...

So the best course of action would have been to simply back out of the parking spot (down the hill) and into the middle of the street and THEN try to go up the hill (on the plowed section of the street).

Sometimes the simple solution is the best (and least obvious).

Yeah, backing up would have been an option if there were no other cars behind, but we can't know that for sure from the angle of the video...

Also due to the video being filmed much higher than the vehicle, we can't really tell what he was trying to get over. It may have been a tall ice berm + road slope.

Or he could just be an idiot.

I actually got stuck in one last winter in my Golf TDI. The only way I got out was to go as slow as possible, use an entire 20lb bag of kitty litter, about 10 pizza boxes, and my wife letting the car idle out of the spot as I held the car trying to not let it slide sideways back into the spot. I was in a single car parking spot (Chicago sized "single" parking spot, so you know it was tight.) Didn't hit either car getting out.

That was a 2.0L TDI and it had plenty of ability to idle out...

LMFAO!!!

Funniest thing I've ever seen. I can watch this again and again.

But you know, it makes me wonder why there is so much controversy as mentioned about the video. Could it be that jeep owner is a member on this forum? Does someone know him and are sticking up for them?

These are questions i am currently asking myself.

1. 2:50+ where he slides back and smashes the right side against that wall of snow. Guaranteed there is some body damage possibly front end
2. He eventually digs those ruts so deep he's essentially using his undercarriage as a snow shovel. even with skids there are plenty of things to break
3. If you're spinning your tires fast enough to smoke on ice, its time to change strategies. I imagine he's one of those guys who drive tires down to the belts

Maybe I've been lucky so far but I've been treating my wk2 like a jeep and have hung frame in deep deep snow at least 4-5 times living up north, lucky been able to get out each time with some luck from the blizzaks, 4 low and some rocking.. no undercarriage damage yet, no skids

knock on wood, but there was definitely an easier way out of that situation. probably not fair to compare blizzaks (magic) with his tires, though.

ecodiesels were getting DEF injectors torn off by snow because it was completely exposed.

It looked to me like the smoke was from his brakes. When the wheels spin doesn't the jeep brake the wheel to divert the torque to the other side? It looks like he needed to raise his ride height to or-2. It seemed like he was high centered.

I believe the brakes are only applied if you have quardadrive2 (ELSD) with the ORA2 package. I didn't see the trail rated badge on his car so I don't think he had that but he could have had quadralift if it was an overland. my thoughts:

1) don't get out of your car if it's in gear.
2) That kid's comment about swearing at the tires was priceless.
3) Kicking the snow around your tires doesn't really work like a shovel or help in any way.
4) I have the ecodiesel with ORA2 and will agree that the 'all terrain' tires that they put on the car are highway tires that suck in snow. I've been driving my '96 ZJ with crappy AT Kumhos that are far far better in the snow to work lately. that being said, I still think I could have gotten out of that situation with my highway tires in less than 60 seconds with a little more thought than he demonstrated. i'll sell my latitudes with 10k miles real cheap if anyone wants them.

Isn't that the basic functionality of "brake-lock differentials" ? I thought all jeeps had some form of that.

That just illustrates how little traction he really has in order to be spinning all 4 wheels.
