Now they Want to Move on Price. . .

So I wrote in the TestDrive/Ordering Experience forum about how no one wanted to move on price of the dozen area dealerships around here in Virginia and I actually ordered from one in Maryland that was willing to go for about 3K under MSRP.

Well in the last 2 days 4 dealerships have called me back suddenly saying they are "able" to now order me whatever I want and that they are now "able" to work with me on price "a little". Its kind of funny they are trying to convince me I should not take delivery of the jeep I ordered a month ago and re-order from them and then wait another month so I can purchase from their dealership.

I dont know about you guys but when I buy any of my cars, I test drive somewhere and then give the dealers one and only one chance to give me their best price. If I like it I buy it, there is no reason in this day and age with all the sticker prices (invoice, msrp, etc) available online to even haggle any more. Its all a waste of time in my opinion. Plus its even more fun to call the dealer and ask for the newest sales guy there and then tell him what you want and if he can make it work will be the easiest sale he ever made.

Apparently all these dealers didnt take me seriously when I said you get one shot to offer a price, because when they gave the line "we are selling these above MSRP" I took my business elsewhere.

As people mentioned earlier I wonder if the lack of cooperation was due to not having the funds or financing available to order new vehicles when they were still loaded with 2010's? Anyone else finding people more willing to work on price now?

If anyone is looking for a dealer this is no BS in the Washington DC area send me a message. And no I dont work for them or know anyone there other than a customer dealer relationship.

I did try Farrish they were probably one of the worst. They were one of the stealershipd that claimed at the end of June/Beginning of July when I was looking they had already been selling for above MSRP. The also called me back yesterday and wanted the details on how much I paid for what options from the dealer I ended up placing an order with. He kept insisting I must have traded something in because he doid know why the dealer would discount like that otherwise. I am no genious but I am pretty sure I still own all my cars so no I did not trade.

Re: Now they Want to Move on Price. . .

yeah same thing happened to me when i shopped around for my SRT back in oct, nov,dec last year. i ended up getting one with my 3rd dealer of choice (manhattan-dealership) but this guy (Neil Iton) pulled out all the stops for me-hands down, i bought him a bottle of walker black the next day when i rolled back in to thank him for my jeep) that kind of service.

but the other dealerships kept badgering me afteri already bought one, asking how much and why i got a 2010 model brand new for 40,000 out the door.. it got annoying after a while so i just said, to them kinda in a rude tone.."yo, if you guys wouldve worked with me a lil bit i wouldve bought my SRT8 there, but nooo, u guys try to work with me after i already bought one.. right??"

they stopped calling me short after- lolz

If they call you, never tell them honestly what deal you got. It's none of their business to begin with, but if you have to play with them a bit, tell them you liked the salesman, you've heard bad things about their service, and paid much more than their original quote.

Re: Now they Want to Move on Price. . .

I'm guessing the losing salesman has to report back to his/her salesmanager why the deal was lost and at what price.
Personally I shop around, but I try and "work" with the dealer closest to me that will provide the best after-sale service. My idea of "working" with the dealer involves sharing the price they have to get to, sometimes it takes haggling and a couple visits, but the dealer appreciates the business afterward.

Re: Now they Want to Move on Price. . .

I can understand not wanting to budge from MSRP on a popular new model. If a dealership wants to sell above MSRP, I walk out and don't come back- period. There's enough profit at MSRP to keep them happy, going for more is just screwing the customer. If they will do that to me off the bat, I have to wonder how else they'd stick it to me on down the line.

When we ordered ours, the dealership noticed my wife worked for Walmart and went ahead and looked up the Walmart employee purchase info for us (we remembered the program, but not the details). Turns out we immediately were at 1% under invoice- no point in haggling. And this was their suggestion; when I bought my Patriot at a different dealership, that one made no such effort to assist us. I guess I'm working with a different dealer now.

As for only now being able to work on price, I wonder if maybe some of these aren't moving quite as fast as they thought. It's an awesome vehicle, but there's folks for whom the bailout left a bad taste in their mouths. Furthermore, it's still a $30K vehicle with so-so mileage in slow economic times. Not too many people are looking to buy something like this right now. In a few months, maybe. Now, maybe not.

They have to make their money somehow. I don't begrudge them the need to feed their own families. They just happen to be the middlemen, and since the buyer is the one with the cash, that's where they make their money.

I look at it like this: if I feel like I have received good treatment (i.e., you didn't put the screws to me), then I am likely to return. If the dealership gives a bit and is willing to make a shade less up front, I am far more likely to come back for service, repair, and eventually a replacement. They'll make a little less in each instance, but there will be more to come.

If they go for as much as they can grab every time, if I'm desperate or lazy enough to do the deal with them, that is likely to be the last time. Sure, they made another thousand bucks or two off me, but that's all they will EVER see.

I'm in Canada where MSRP is about $8K more than in the US but the local Chrysler dealer swung me a deal on a Laredo X, at almost the MSRP in US. There are deals to be found. Now I just have to wait for it to be built & shipped.....

Re: Now they Want to Move on Price. . .

These guys are all full of shit. Again, its still and Grand Cherokee and it is STILL a mass production vehicle. Anyone who pays MSRP for these is getting taken for a ride.
