Re: NYC Crane collapse... WK2 Crushed

That is horribly sad. I'm surprised, and thankful, that there weren't more that were killer or injured by this. Absolutely crazy

Re: NYC Crane collapse... WK2 Crushed

Read this early this morning, tragic to see the gentlemen lost his life.
My first thoughts were I hoped my old mate Robert Palmer was safe and well.

Seems this crane company yet again has a lot of explaining to do!

Re: NYC Crane collapse... WK2 Crushed

Not that it takes anything away from a loss of life, but for this forums sake looks like it was a pedestrian that was killed that was walking, not a person in the WK2.

There is a video that was taken immediately after the incident. The guy in the Jeep seem to just have a small head wound but the guy that was standing next to the car got killed.

So there was actually someone in that Grand Cherokee when that thing crashed down on it? I do see the rear door open.

Yea. I was forwarded the link to TMZ of all places. You'll find the video there.

Not sure. Maybe the cable that connects the drum to the gantry mast gave way or somehow the drum did not spool properly and the ropes got tangled and sheered. Or maybe the brakes gave way and then re-grabbed the momentum tipped it over. From what i read, the crane had been inspected and they were doing the right thing to lower it given the weather.

13 Years Ago I Needed a Crane at 60 Hudson

My condolences to the family of, David Wichs, who lost his life today.

60 Hudson Crane Collapse by BicycleBanner, on Flickr

A related, non-Jeep, story:
The red brick building in the pictures is 60 Hudson St. (aka the old Western Union building) which was getting some AC equipment put on the roof. 13 years ago while working for a telecommunication company I had a job to build a small central office on one of the upper floors? The central office is like a heavy steel erector set with 8-10ft. sections of steel ladder racking, 7ft. tall steel equipment bays etc... Well a tractor trailer arrived loaded with all the steel and the driver says he doesn't deliver the stuff to the upper floors because he just drives the truck and doesn't touch the freight not to mention itís a union building. So for the rest of the day I unloaded the truck by hand and carried all the steel, piece by piece, using the very small freight elevator up to the job site. I sweated like a whore in church but I got the job done. If I had turned that load away the project would have been delayed for another week and we were on a strict deadline. Yada yada yada I understand the need for cranes in NYC because there is only a few dumb son-of-b****, like myself, who'll do a job without them.

There was no load on the crane when it came down. They were in the process of securing it due to the wind conditions at the time.

Some reports state that the person killed was a pedestrian. The article in the link to the video quotes FDNY stating that the person who was killed was sitting in his car. In either case, that's tragic.

Re: NYC Crane collapse... WK2 Crushed

Why would they not evacuate the streets below when carrying out an operation like this??? Seems like the inconvenience of blocking off the streets to all traffic would be a minor inconvenience compared to the potential loss of life and limb. Thoughts are with all those affected.

Thanks for the concern Ben! Appreciate it. I was in my office a few blocks away when it happened! Something terrible. They are damn lucky that more people did not get killed.

Hope the injured make a speedy and full recovery and take the insurance company for the crane company and the crane company for every penny they can. Once again another issue with this company.
