Greetings,

Nope, not a tower crane which is common for skyscraper construction.

That is a Crawler Crane. The crane engine for the wench is on the bottom. The boom that was used was 565 feet long starting from about 8-10 feet off street level. As you can see from the below picture, the cab flipped with the length of the entire boom.

Examples of Crawler Cranes in the upright position:

In the 5 bores of NYC, you will find a lot of these with different boom lengths.

Best for now.

Greetings,

The crane crew was actually following protocol. They did block and reroute traffic for this operation. However, IMHO, due to the length of the boom, more measures should have been taken. Their is growing controversy here in NYC about the standards of inspections of the cranes. This also includes review of the secure position which this crane was going into.

If the crews did not implement the safety procedures that they had, this could easily been way over hundred or a couple of hundred dead at 8.20 am on Worth street. You have a lot express buss using that street going east bound, you have folks walking to walk and other car and truck vehicles. Not to mention the destruction and loss of life in the buildings on the block. I myself use Worth street at various times in the morning to get from side to side in the boro of Manhattan.

Prayers to all those affected and to the family of David Wichs for their tragic loss.

Best for now.

I would day this was a miracle that

Hope the injured make a speedy and full recovery and take the insurance company for the crane company and the crane company for every penny they can. Once again another issue with this company.
Thanks for the reply. I hope you're well my friend.

Re: NYC Crane collapse... WK2 Crushed

Very sad indeed. I had read that they cleared the area but obviously not 100% perhaps because they were just lowering it. Will be interested to see what was the exact cause as it had been mentioned earlier there was no load at the time.

I'm waiting for those 2 squashed grand Cherokees to appear on eBay so I can buy them cheap and build an 8 wheel 2 engined monster in my secret cave.....

Now given that I'm 6'5 I may not be able to drive it sitting, but I have a genius plan for a lying down driver position
