OBD code shortcut

Check engine icon came on upon engine start.

Is there any way to find out the code with
key on key off type of thing? I know it's a button.

I shut it down and checked the oil, it was low but visible,
I added a quart, but icon still on.

Will low oil throw the engine icon?

Thanks.

edit:
Can anyone move this to the troubleshooting area?

Re: OBD code shortcut

No, they removed that feature from the WK2. You need a code reader or a parts store that will read and reset for you.

Re: OBD code shortcut

Thanks for the courageous response.

I'll check all fluids and head to the parts store for an OBD
scanner tomorrow.

Re: OBD code shortcut

I wouldn't mess around with a check engine light, especially if you're still under warranty.

Re: OBD code shortcut

Low oil isn't going to throw a code unless the oil got so low you dropped oil pressure. If oil was visible, you weren't that low on a level start. You may have had some issue driving through turns as the oil sloshed around.

Re: OBD code shortcut

Well, I couldn't stand it! I had the autoparts dude scan it.
It's P0456, the gas cap, leak test system.

I'm going to wait a few days.

Thanks all.
