Jeep WK2 2014 Overland - I was getting the jeep ready to have it towed to the dealer and while under the drivers dash I spotted a module plugged into the obdII port. Anyone know what it is for? I unplugged it and the engine starts with no errors in the display. Just curious if it may be a recorder similar to what Progressive insurance offers.

+1 to Todd3.6 I was at the dealership on Friday with the wife's GC and they plugged in a wireless OBDII reader as part of checking the jeep into the service bay. Or if your not the original owner the previous owner forgot about the reader they installed. I've got one that I use with the DashCommand app.

I am the original owner and I took it to only one dealer for computer updates regarding the radio. Now it's going back to the same dealer for warranty work - service shifter, service transmission, Christmas tree display and bad radio reception.

I think I will keep the module to remind me of the five hours it took them to do a half hour update per the invoice. I have an appointment with the service manager first thing in the morning, so it should prove an interesting day.:slapfight:

A part number lookup yielded.....
CalAmp LMU-3000 GPRS Series (LMU-3030)
SKU: LMU30G600-G1000

GPS Tracking Unit with OBD-II Interface

The LMU-3000 is an economical, full-featured vehicle tracking product designed for easy and reliable installation in automobiles. The LMU-3000 is an ideal solution for automotive insurance, driver behavior management, auto rental and automotive applications when access to the vehicle diagnostics interface (OBD-II) is required.

Yeah, I'll probably return it to the dealer once I get my JGC. Haven't had it since yesterday and miss it. The Jeep Patriot rental with a four banger sucks, but that's all they had available yesterday. Really miss the hemi.

You cannot use a BT OBDII module with a Iphone/iPad as they will only work with the more costly WiFi ones. You can use the BT ones for Windows/Droid however.

I'm still really suss that the device left in the car has tracking ability. Does it have a SIM in it Eastof111?

Thanks for confirming the cheapest of the cheap dongles work StarionVR4. I'm going to splash out my hard won seven bucks now. [emoji3]

Cheers,

I bought a different model but a BT OBDII for use with iOS over a year ago. It has to be input as a Dodge or FIAT 3.6 engine but is a useful little tool but for engine only at this time.

I also use a dash camera that now offers higher end black boxes with a OBDII piece to record virtually everything. It's a nightmare to my daughter who might be driving at the end of next year. As for auto insurance companies like progressive, I simply wouldn't have it in my car. I already assume Big Bother watches us enough. Seriously on the dash camera I have to always check to see if it's muted. Nothing worse that photo evidence for court with loud music playing and a multitude of F- bombs being dropped as you get smashed into by clueless driver. Be sure what it is.

I bought one a year back, but Jeep doesn't let their code be read. I can check my engine using Dodge or Chrysler/Fiat 3.8L, but it will not read any of the other diagnostic notices.

Jeep needs to change things to be a bit more transparent. They will start losing market share, because of so many problems along with bad dealerships plaguing the system, at least here.
