Off Road I or II-to ELSD or not to ELSD

I have a 2000 JGC Limited that really needs replacing. The QuadraDrive in mine is fantastic and it seems like the new one may not be as good.

I would like to have the Electronic Limited Slip Differential (rear only?) but am concerned about the air suspensions reliability and Total Cost of Ownership. I usually replace my shocks every 60K and can only imagine what that will cost with the air suspension. What are any of you with the air suspension planning to do down the road when the shocks need repair or replacement? Any idea what it will cost to replace the OEM shocks with same?

Another option: settle for QT II instead. At least on '11 model it could be had without QL on Laredo X and Limited.

I now own '11 Laredo X with QT I and V6.When I was looking I decided I don't really need QL and didn't want potential hassle of having one more thing to break.

Re: Off Road I or II-to ELSD or not to ELSD

Personally I would get the limited with the lux II, 5.7, 730n, Tow IV, and 20 inch rims. This gives you Overland Luxury without the possible unknown future problems of the Quadra Lift.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking, I just really wanted the locker. Does anybody know about aftermarket for it? Thanks!

So you recommend the 730N over the 430N? I have an iPhone 4 that I use to play podcasts all the time but I heard the Garmin nav was better. Thanks!

Re: Off Road I or II-to ELSD or not to ELSD

I guess it is personal preference but The 730n is widely considered as the "premium" while the 430n is considered "entry level." The 730n has some bugs like it erases radio presets, home settings, and pois for some but I guess that a software fix for that will be out soon.

It can be had on all trim levels. My Laredo E has QT2

Re: Off Road I or II-to ELSD or not to ELSD

The 430 has a better nav, the 730N has better voice integration, but there are so many other 730 defects... err quirks.. that its not the preferred radio. You are forced into the 730N on the high end JGCs, however.

The QL also uses conventional shocks, at least in the rear.

Invest in a lifetime warranty if you are concerned about failures, factor it into your cost.

There is no aftermarket ELSD, except perhaps one out of a scrapped vehicle. You also need the software or the code enabled.

Unfortunately Jeep is making the ESLD harder and harder to buy. You currently can't get it without all the other bells a whistles. There is no front ELSD.

QD is just a QT II case with rear ELSD and some software.

Re: Off Road I or II-to ELSD or not to ELSD

Get a 2011 with the lift and get the lifetime warranty. It will still cost less than a 2012.
my 730n is a piece of crap. If you can find a 430 get it as the 730 is terrible and expensive to update. I'm still using my phone for nag because the 730 is junk.:

Sorry I disagree. I don't think the 730 is junk. I've read about the issues...all will be fixed when a software update comes out. Remember this thing didn't come out until January this year. Also, I haven't experienced the erased home address or bluetooth streaming of music that has been reported by some so I love it. I totally understand reporting problems on here as we all should but I don't like blanket statements that aren't true. I'm sorry you're having issues with your 730N but to the OP, just check it out for yourself and decide. Dead reckoning is also a huge factor on the 730 Nav that the 430 Nav doesn't have among other things.

With that said, I definitely agree with you on your recommendation to the OP about getting a 2011 with QDII and ELSD and the Lifetime Warranty over a 2012 presuming he can find one equipped the way he wants it.

Pretty close. For the premium you pay for the 730N, you would think it would work much better, there is absolutely no excuse, how long had harmon been making radios??? The 730 series has been around for years, complaints are across the chrysler car lines. The iPod integration is terrible, and the GPS subpar. The 730N does not have the premium GPS features that those of us have used GPS for years come to expect in top of the line units... except for dead reckoning which is OK but not great. It does seem to be pretty good at voice/hands free control, so its not all bad.... but my $90 clarion does iPod much better, and my $100 Garmin does directions much better..... not that I am bitter.

I'm curious...what ipod integration issues are you having? Granted, I use my current 3GS (was going to get the 4S but I'll wait for the 5) as my ipod and phone and have had zero issues with bluetooth streaming which I love. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is the holy grail of radios/nav but I think it does what I expect it to so far.
