How, exactly, would the computer have known you did the oil change?

Answer= it doesn't. It doesn't have sensors in the oil or anything; it goes solely off of how you drive and when you reset the indicator. It is possible to reset the change indicator even when it hasn't dinged at you- you just follow the procedure outlined in the manual. But if you don't reset it, it will assume you're running off the same crankcase of oil you've been using.

This vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The “Oil Change Required” message will flash in the EVIC display for approximately 10 seconds after a single chime has sounded, to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate, dependent upon your personal driving style.
As others have said, severe duty is not "I tow a car trailer loaded with 4 1 ton pickups back and fourth across the united states", It considers runtimes, speeds, and how its driven along with other things... also as said half or more of your dirving has been short trips, severe duty.

Re: Oil change at 3,500 miles??

The Owners Manual shows 8000 miles between oil changes and it does say that you may need to change it more frequently for "severe" driving conditions, but it doesn't say exactly how much more frequently that would be. My 2008 Jeep Liberty manual says 6,000 miles for "schedule A", which is normal driving conditions, and 3,000 miles between oil changes for "schedule B", which is for severe driving conditions. Nevertheless, My EVIC chimed off at 3500 miles that I need an oil change as well. It's looking like this is a pre-programmed first oil change interval, and not something kicked off by any computer calculation based on driving conditions.

I'd believe this, but it doesn't seem like it's getting everybody. Mine didn't go off at 3500 miles. I wonder if it's a Hemi thing or a revision to the computer software.

Good question. Mine is a Hemi and it went off at 3500 miles. Can we get a larger data sample? For those of you that did not have it go off at 3500 miles, do you have a Hemi or a Pentastar?

Re: Oil change at 3,500 miles??

Mine's a HEMI and went off at 3500 miles. As usual I'm glad I'm reading this forum. Mine went off about 2 weeks ago during a 1000 mile roundtrip from Ohio to Virginia. I thought perhaps I was doing too much spirited driving through the hills and it didn't like it. This thread makes me feel a little better.

Changed mine @ 1,000, 4,000 and today @ 7,000 miles, each time with 0-20 Mobil 1 and a Wix filter. No EVIC notification so far.

Re: Oil change at 3,500 miles??

Like others here mine called for the first O/C at 3500, the dealer said it was based on how i drive--sounds more like it was programmed that way.

Re: Oil change at 3,500 miles??

mine also just went off at 3500 miles...I was also told the same about getting it done at 8000...I will probably just get it done for peace of mind....

next question is do I take it to the dealership for my complimentary oil change or do I just take it to the place Ive been going to for ten years...not sure if I wanna spend ,y entire day off at the dealership

Re: Oil change at 3,500 miles??

With an appointment, my dealership gets you in and out in 1 to 1 1/2 hours... enough time for comp. coffee and donut and walk aroung looking at new cars.
