I did the first one when the dealer told me to, which was at 3000. They say it's a good idea to have your jeep looked at after you've broken it in and driven it a bit to make sure there's no issues anywhere or with anything on your vehicle. I then spaced out my oil changes a little bit for the next two until I could get on the 5000 mile cycle.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

Changed the first one at 3000 and switched to penzol full synthetic. Since then when the oil life monitor tells me to. Previous jeep was a 2001 grand Cherokee anniversary edition with a 4.7. Changed that at 3000 and switched to full synthetic mobile one. Donated it to Purple Heart when I got my 2014 and it had 150000 miles with no issues and started right up and drove onto the truck. Never smoked or used oil.
I'm 70 so I remember the 3k oil changes. But that oil was garbage compared to today's oil. Engines then we're not built to the same machining standards today's are and the metallurgy was prehistoric also. So why you would want to continue an out of date practice like that escapes me. To each his own. 😜

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

I go by the Oil Life Monitor. When it gets down to 10%, I get it changed out. Just had it done last week, which was good as I have a road trip starting tomorrow.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

My first oil change was at 3500 miles. The factory oil has special additives to help break in the engine and the recommendation was to wait until 3000 miles before the first oil change.

I changed it out for full synthetic Pennzoil Ultra. I've been changing mine about every 6 months at 8500 miles and I have been sending it off to Blackstone labs for analysis. They are telling me that there is still plenty of additives left in the oil to go 10,000 miles and the wear particles and contaminants have been in the normal range for the last couple of changes.

I'm now planning, like others, to just follow the built-in oil life meter.

The weak link in the oil system now is the filter, not the oil. Which is probably why Jeep warns us not to exceed 10,000 miles for an oil change. Don't get me wrong, the Mopar filter is a good quality oil filter, they just wear out from use sooner than the oil does.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

Did first change at 3500 miles. Now going by the change indicator which factors in how hard you drive the vehicle... Seems accurate to me... Using regular oil.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

Switched to full synthetic at 1000 miles in all my vehicles and then follow the oil life monitor or 1 year. According to Chrysler and GM, no special additives are added to the oil prior to shipment to the dealer.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

My dealer gives free oil changes and the first was at 3K, second at 8K. Since it costs nothing but some time, I'll bring it in when they remind me. They also check for recall's and TSB's and no hard sells for other services. Takes about an hour with free danish, coffee and wifi

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

I did the first change at 3000 miles after buying new. I then follow the oil change indicator. Typically it alerts me at around the 8500 - 9000 mile range. I do drive a lot (32K+ / yr) so I'm thankful it's not the old 3K/3 month that I was used to when I first started driving.

I take mine into the dealership and use the standard oil. Also, I don't tow.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

I just had my first oil change yesterday with just over 6,000 miles and still showing 40% on the gauge. My dealership uses Pennzoil. I was told I would get free oil changes for two years, total of 4, when I bought the Jeep. yesterday, they said I owed $42 for the oil change. They claimed that I didn't qualify for the free changes because they are in TN and I live in KY. They said it was a regional thing. Well, I got my free oil change and some paperwork that says I am entitled to 3 more free ones. They put a sticker on my windshield that says it's due for another one in 3,000 miles

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

I would run from that dealership. The 3,000 mile oil change is extra money in their pockets. Only if the oil monitor counted down to near zero (under severe conditions) would I change it at only 3,000.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

I change it when the monitor tells me to - it's usually around 8k. Uses whatever Mopar oil the dealer puts in.
