Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

What are all of you doing for oil change intervals? Dealer recommends every 3k using conventional. Kinda of think that is very early...Thoughts and no flames. First American car in the family since 1988. (Besides my Vette).

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

The schedule for oil changes is listed in your owner's manual. You can also link to maintenance schedules at this link:

Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - Maintenance information and schedules

You can select the 2014 listing to see your schedule and unless you do the things that put you in the "heavy use" category use Schedule A.

Many dealer service departments try to get folks to do the old 3K oil changes, but most modern vehicles do not require that under normal service conditions. As you'll note...your change interval if you have a MY14-15 is 10K miles, not 3K miles.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

My .02, having recently come from a 2000 Passat 1.8t (gas) with over 400k miles until untimely black ice incident in March. I can attest that 5000 mile oil changes are fine with regular oil. However, if you were to follow the MFG maintenance schedule and go to 10K oil changes I would definitely switch to synthetic. 3K oil changes are just a waste of oil, unless you are in "severe" service. IE very dusty condtions, extreme temperatures, very short drive.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

I guess I'll go in the mix and say 7,500 miles. My guess is that I have been doing it roughly every 7,500-10,000 miles. Keep an eye on the oil reset on how many miles that has and what the life meter says, that is what I have been going off of. The old 3k miles should be a thing of the past with new cars but service departments don't want people to realize that.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

When I first got mine they said anywhere between 3750-7500 miles. When I got my last oil change a few weeks ago the dealership said it doesn't say in the manual and to go based on the oil life sensor in the car. So basically I go between every 5K-7K miles since I drive a lot.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

I'm almost due for my first "free" oil change. I suppose I'm going to be harassed about buying something while I'm there. Tire rotation, injector cleaner, oil additives, blinker fluid, timeshare presentation, or something. Anyone else had to put up with a bunch of crap to get their free oil change?

When I got mine it came with 4 free oil changes. I used those up and the dealership didn't really hassle me about buying anything extra except for tire rotations. the dealership I take mine says to do it every 5K miles (or every oil change) which is way to early for it. Other than that the dealerships haven't hassled me about anything else.

10K Miles, 12 Months or the Oil Change indicator which ever happens first.

Re: Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

I used up my first 4 free oil changes at the dealership... changed it every 5k miles. I have since switched to synthetic oil (Castrol Edge). I have done 2 changes myself and the first time I changed it after 5k miles and sent it for UOA. The report suggested I run it longer. I changed my next oil at 7500 miles and the report said the oil was still good. But, moving forward, I decided that I will change it 6k miles or 6 months which ever comes first. I send used oil for analysis (blackstone labs) from all my vehicles.

I consider oil changes as cheap insurance. I did regular oil changes on my ZJ and it ran 170k miles without any issues till the day I sold it and bought my current WK2.

I am going to do mine every 5000. I don't drive that far every year and I figure it's a good thing to get it in to have it looked over at least every 5000 miles. Plus, it's really easy to remember when I need to change my oil as it is always a nice even number

Oil Change Intervals on the 3.6?

When should I do my first oil change?

Even the first one at 5,000 or more? Or do you change the oil earlier for the first time?
