Oil change required "early"

Hey everyone. Been a while since I have been on the forum. My 2012 oil change indicator turned on a few weeks ago. I thought to myself, I swear I just changed the jeep oil. So I looked in my records and I did change it in February and only put about 4000 miles on since. I went ahead and changed it and the oil did look pretty black for what I would have thought would be pretty new oil. Any ideas what could have caused such a quick oil change? I reset the indicator back when I changed it in February. Maybe my wife is driving with a very heavy lead foot? Or could there be an issue?
Thanks!

Re: Oil change required "early"

short trips is what is hard on oil because it does not get moisture out.
and winter short trips are worse than summer.

Re: Oil change required "early"

Yes, numerous short trips in cold weather will cause the indicator to come on MUCH sooner. The owner's manuals in my other vehicles say that it "can" come on in as little as 3,000 miles if the conditions are severe enough.

Heavy lead foot is actually more benign as far as oil life--if it get the entire engine up to high temperature and burn off condensation, etc.

Short winter trips would be a guess, IF the oil life sensing takes account of temperatures and trip length etc. Otherwise something could be busted.

Yes, indeed - the system monitors many variables such as the number of start/stop cycles, oil temps and duration, mileage since last reset, etc. It's actually a pretty sophisticated algorithm.

Must of been the cold weather short trips. We had negative 15 temps in February and my wife takes the kids to school 3 miles one way every day. Hopefully that's all it was.
