Yeah, they won't change it, and tell you they did...as you can see, I have trust issues.

Damn, I never thought of it like that. I'll keep my eye on the oil and filter before I bring it in next.

Re: Oil change schedule

Unless you're doing some extremely hard traveling, change it by the manufacturer's recommendations, not the dealer's. The later wants your money...and the sooner they help you use up your freebies, the sooner they can reach back into your pockets. Your 2014 oil change interval is every 10,000 miles or 12 months or when the onboard computer tells you it needs done. Not 3,000 miles. That wastes oil and wastes money.

They are trying to train you to do it at 3K.
They can also get away with cheaper oil if they change it that frequent.

I pass on my free oil changes. I also have the first few changes analyzed.

I have always heard that the first oil change on a new car should be analyzed. Where do recommend having this done? What are you looking for in the analysis when you get it back.

It's probably better to have the second or third change analyzed. The factory fill will be full of wear in metals. It'll be near impossible to deduce anything other than inadequate air filtration or coolant in the oil in that first fill.

I use Blackstone. They're reasonably priced and provide a nice paragraph long writeup explaining their opinion on your results.

I also use Blackstone.

I analyze at least the first 3 oil changes on a new car. I want a baseline from the very first oil change to make sure things are progressing in the right direction right from the first oil change.

Re: Oil change schedule

I haven't used Blackstone yet but I did get their test kit mailed to me. It's in the garage, ready for my next (the 2nd) change. They send it to you free of charge, and you pay when you send your sample in.

Re: Oil change schedule

Serious question. I have never had oil analysed and don't know anyone who has.

What changes has anyone here done to their vehicles based on an oil analysis? I'm not really interested in what could be, or what somebody read about. I would like to hear about actual experience.

Thanks.

Re: Oil change schedule

Anyone know how the computer computes the oil life? Is it just straight engine runtime or something fancier?

Re: Oil change schedule

very similar to gm system used since the 90s. has many factors such as time, miles, rpms, temp etc etc. has proven to be very reliable system..

Re: Oil change schedule

That's right. Engine stops/starts, run time duration, distance travelled, outside and coolant temps, engine RPM's, mileage, etc. It's a good go-by for oil changes.
