Only on the DC Beltway...

It seems appropriate that this number came up while I was on the DC Beltway (I-495) on Thursday afternoon...unfortunately I couldn't match the speed, too...that would have been fatal.

I was actually thinking the same thing, but it wouldn't have been fair to put the photo into Photoshop and doctor it up. LOL Or maybe it would be appropriate given that the DC Beltway can be such an "evil" place at that time of day...

I avoid I-495 like the plague. Makes driving on California Freeways seem like a picnic.

Re: Only on the DC Beltway...

I'd like to avoid it, Tarpon', but without going WAY out of my way when I go to or head home from a company facility in Fair Lakes/Fairfax, I have to endure at least some of it if I can't time things right. At least there's an EZPass lane for part of it now, but that area between just north of the Dulles toll road through the I-270 split is largely unavoidable and crawls after about 3pm. My briefing on Thursday ran over and I didn't get to leave until 4:30...and it sucked mightily!

I know what you mean. I sometimes take MD 301, which is longer, but usually less painful in the end.

Re: Only on the DC Beltway...

I hate all the interstates in the NoVA area! lol! Here is my order of hatred, with one being the most hated:

1. I-95 N/S
2. I-66 E/W
3. I-495 (inner loop/outer loop)

Those are the only interstates I use mostly. An honorable hate-mention is I-81, that interstate is a two lane hell, lol.

Re: Only on the DC Beltway...

"Timing is everything" when it comes to these highways in the NoVA and DC area! Sometimes if things run later in the day, I don't bother to even try. I hang out, have a nice dinner and THEN drive north. That usually gets me home at the same time as I would have if I sat in the traffic... ...with less stress and a leisurely meal enjoyed.

Re: Only on the DC Beltway...

The number one disaster of a road in my book is I-66, don't go near it west bound between 2pm to 8pm. No other road I have driven on in the country tops the continued log jam of that road. the worst part is it continuing decade after decade not doing anything about or making any substantial improvements. Virginia will talk about an improvement for 10 years, then study it for another 5 years, then environmental assessment another 5 years, then out for bid for a few years all for maybe 1 lane that will do nothing that's the way Virginia operates. over on the other side of the river when Maryland expanded I270 years ago, a similar corridor, they took it from 4 lanes to 12 lanes why because they think and plan over there. Maryland has their beltway issues but they do a far better job than VA with anything involving asphalt and that's coming from a VA person.
