Usually it depends on the size/severity of the dents as well as the over all proximity of all the dents. If you have alot of dents on a single panel the shop may want to replace it, but if their able they may try painless dent removal (popping them out) they probably will. Either way your gonna end up with whatever allstate decides to do. If they take it to their own shop like progressive then they will generally do whatever is cheapest.

By the way, if you know of any reputable shop then go to them without worries. If you don't know of any, my friend who I went to high school with has a shop. He works works on all my cars including my Z and will be working on my GC to fix hail damage. Feel free to give him a call 917 560-1436. Just tell him Sam sent you and he'll take care of you.

His shop is located in Inwood, i'm dropping my wife's GC off to him tomorrow morning and he'll have an enterprise car ready for me since Allstate will take care of the rental.

I went through that with my wk a couple months ago. Busted windshield, sunroof, and battered hood, roof, and sides. Overall was over 7k in damage.
I use farm bureau for ins. They had me get an estimate(I got several) from the body shop of my choice, then they cut me a personal check for the amount minus deductible. Now all the local body shops are booked into next year because of all the hail damaged vehicles.
Repair on mine includes new glass and hood, and a mix of PDR and bodywork for the rest.

Hail damage in the Bronx. Crazy, lucky only my hood got damaged, feels like a golf ball. The shop i took it to will replace the hood, allstate taking care of it. Got too late to cover the hood, but was able to grab a wool blanket and lay it on the roof and windshield. Barely hit 2000 miles.

Where did you guys get hit with the hail? I know the storms were isolated, I saw lots of black here and there but luckily didn't get hit with anything severe.

I'm in Bayside and I barely got rain...meanwhile one town over got hammered. The photos I saw were insane. Sorry for those who got damage!!!

2011 GC Blackberry Pearl with 8k miles, $8500 in damage. Need new hood, new roof, entire side rail along the top of the doors, rear pillers (both sides of the rear windshield), rear panels (behind rear doors) UUGGHH!!!! MOTHER FKK!!! 3 to 4 week till we get the truck back. FML!

Craziest thing is my wife always parks in an indoor parking lot. She had a meeting at a different location that morning so by the time she got to her hospital where she works, all the indoor spots were taken. She had no choice but to park on the street. The only day she parks on the street is the only time it hails. It's so frustrating.

How do they replace things such as the top rails and rear pillars? They actually cut them out or they just sand down to bare metal, bondo and paint?

Does the whole vehicle get a paint job to make sure it blends?

Sorry to hear of all the damage it caused!

Without pics it didn't happen. ;)

Welcome to my world. I've lived in Colorado for 24 years and I've had hail damage on every car I've owned (9) in that time. After awhile, you just stop worrying about it and drive ... and Mythbusters did a test showing that a car with golf-ball dimples gets better gas mileage than the same car without.

I wonder if you can ask your insurance company about a "loss of value" payment. I've heard of this in situations where it was a collision but not sure about comp damage like this. The rationale is basically that even if your repair are really really good, there was still significant damage (and repair) to your car that will show up on a VIN report which depreciates the resale value of your car. Might be worth while researching...

EDIT: Just found this on another site (not certain of the accuracy)...
"Unless you live in the state of Georgia you can not collect diminished value from your own insurance company from a hail claim.
As far as diminished value from the collision, it would depend on the extent of the damage. If the damage to either vehicle is greater than $2000.00 then you may have a claim for diminished value."

What a bummer. We had this happen to my wife's car last year, you might want to take it to a PDR place on your own to see what they can do. The insurance company and even my trusted bodyshop said all those panels had to be replaced and repainted, but my PDR shop got every last dent out without ever having to paint, and that included the aluminum hood on the Prius...

IMHO you're better off with PDR and keeping the factory paint.

My dent guy is so good they fly him from the west coast to all over the states. A dealer in Oklahoma retained him for a month to remove the hail dents on a fleet of their cars. The damage and work to undo it, and the results, were un-freaking-real. I can provide the guy's name upon request as I wouldn't want to be guilty of advertising.

Yeah pretty much the truck needs to be painted. PDR in certain places will work but there are certain dents that is very bad and needs a lot of work. I'll see if I can go by the shop tomorrow and take a few pics.

That's probably the best route to take...do as much pdr now and then minimize the amount of filler
