Overland in the Snow

I have finally decided on the Overland instead of the limited...

One Question:

I love the look of the 20's, but would the 18's be any better in the snow? I won't really be doing much(if any) off-roading but I want something that is VERY competent in the snow and don't really want to buy snow tires...

Re: Overland in the Snow

Wouldn't the tire choice be more important than the size?

I'm assuming the stock tires are different on the 18's vs the 20's...

Re: Overland in the Snow

Well based on the stock tires that come on the car the 18" score better in every category....especially in the snow. Go to TireRack.com and check it out

Re: Overland in the Snow

Short answer is that you won't get something VERY competent in the snow unless you buy tires that are intended for it. You can keep the 20's but the stock tires won't be nearly as good as a tire that is designed for snow. All seasons just don't really cut it if you want performance that is "VERY competent" in snow. Of course this is all relative to your climate, terrain and expectations. In my experience, all seasons will typically provide acceptable snow performance the first year, but degrades significantly with average yearly mileage.

The tires on the 18's will be marginally better in the snow I think. But still not that great.

+1 to Mogul's comments.

Looks like Blizzaks are available in the 20's per the all carbon WK2 at Sema.

A jeep will not get stuck as easily, but will not stop any better than a Honda Accord in the snow, unless you put better tires on. 20 inch snow tires cost a lot more than 18 inch, and have less sidewall to protect the rim when you hit a pothole. Keep the 20s for summer, and buy a second set of 18 inch wheels for winter with Blizzaks.

Re: Overland in the Snow

I will be buying the black mopar rims(18) with winter tires. It is always better to have two sets if you can afford it. Another thing to consider is that Gas mileage will go down a lot with the winter tires.

Re: Overland in the Snow

There are very few tire selections for the 20", the Limited I bought has 20" and I kind of wish I had bought it with 18" rims, far more choices. For me a tire with block tread usually works pretty well in snow and all around. I rode Michelin LTX M/S's for years and they were great in the snow. I see they came out with an 18" version LTX M/S 2 265-60/18 that seems to look very similar and has decent reviews. Not cheap but not many of the good tires are especially larger ones.
