Re: Overland or Summit??

You guys helped me decided on a Summit. The time is coming, next week. But one more thing...

Pentastar or Hemi?
Here's what I'll use it for:
+/- 40k mi/yr mostly hgwy
Occasionally tow 2 jets skis or a 14ft trailer for home improvement purposes
Soccer. Two little kiddos in soccer. Road tripping.

The old me would have said HEMI. But this past year I have bought a new house and my wife quit her job to go back to school. I'm trying to be sensible lol

Not even considering the diesel because I don't like them. Characteristics of them just aren't for me.

Then I think if I chose the Hemi, I might as well just get the SRT. I can't decide!!!

***The only reason I'm hesitant towards the Pentastar is the horror stories of transmission issues...

Overland or Summit??

I ordered my overland in the USA in late May 2015 with the HK improved audio systems (19 speakers). It cost about $790, worth it to me. I bought the overland because of the better ride of the 18 inch wheels and the outdoor adventure option, tow hooks and less chrome. I went with the gas V6, better gas mileage than the Hemi, less hassle and cost less than the diesel (upfront and maintenance). I occasionally tow a 3000 lbs boat, should be OK. Gas V6 is a peppy engine and the 8 speed tranny helps. I am sure you will be happy with either vehicle.

Yeah it's a tough call but here is how I look at it and the reason I chose a Hemi. First off I previously had a 2012 Overland V6 and was also trying to be sensible. Unfortunately not even a month into it I was bored of the V6 and regretted the decision. I think that was mainly because the terrible shift timing of the older tranny (prior to the 8spd). It was just so blah seemed like it was programmed to shift in a super economical manner all the time. I don't tow, don't off-road, but enjoy the power and sound of the V8 and that's why I chose it. I also thought about the SRT and even though fuel economy isn't all that different, it requires premium fuel, and the upfront price tag would have been atleast 15 grand more and that I just couldn't justify. The regular Hemi has enough get up and go and great sound that it is absolutely sufficient for my fun driving needs. Put it in sport mode and it downright surprises you. I LOVE listening to the engine and how the 8spd shifts gears. It just sounds perfect and I look forward to every chance I get to drive it. If I didn't have two kids and I wife then I probably would have found a way to justify the SRT, but I am absolutely digging my '14 Summit.

Re: Overland or Summit??

It's a small issue but for me the tow hooks on the Overland were important-we carry things like a canoe or kayak and the easy to get at tie down spot really helps.
As for ride-I find the ride on the 20" wheels perfectly fine, and my off roaring is really limited to bad gravel roads where the additional tire sidewall height isn't a huge factor.
I don't think you can go wrong with either model-sounds like the summit will be a good choice for you.

If you are on the fence then get the hemi or you will probably just wish you did later. With most of your driving highway the hemi does well on the highway for what it is and not a dramatic difference in the two.

Do you deal with snow/slush/ice? The Hemi gets you the Quadra Drive ll with the rear ELSD differential. It is helpful with slippery starts from a standstill.

It cannot be added to the V6.

Re: Overland or Summit??

Engine choice is highly subjective as there are MANY threads on this. They're all good choices depending on what you intend to use the vehicle for. The V6 transmission has had more issues than the German built ZF unit in the Diesel and Hemi.

I've bought two V6's (MY14 and MY15) and zero regrets. I lost count how many feet of snow we had in MA this year (9ft+ or something).

Not once did I think, oh how wish I had an ELSD. But I sure am glad I had Proper Snows (Nokian but almost any M+S will do fine) on it which are 10x more important than ELSD in snow/slush/ice. ELSD really comes into play in serious off road (e.g. rock climbing).

The "Limited Slip" is a crude device and the crap that wears off the clutch plates just floats in the diff fluid. Friction modifiers are required in the fluid so the plates don't chatter and needs to be changed out.

The ABS "Virtual Anti Slip" will cover you in normal slippery driving and with proper snow tires, even that will rarely need to kick in.
