Re: Overland or used X5

After decades of disciplined spending we sought last fall to replace our 1997 Grand Cherokee (182K miles) with a new vehicle. Wanting to treat ourselves for staying the financial course all of those years, we began the search with BMW X3. We'd owned a couple of BMWs over the years, purchased used, and each was expensive to repair. But oh, those cars are fun to drive. If you've ever owned one, you'd know.

The X5 was out of the question. Could we afford it? Yes. Would we pay that much money for a BMW and then have to worry about what happened when the odometer flipped to 50K miles? No.

Long story short, we got our 2014 JGC Limited with Lux II, 20s, tow and Nav plus we purchased the Chrysler lifetime service contract for right about what we'd have paid for a similarly (but still lesser) equipped BMW X3. We love it.

What they said and if it has that stupid 2 part hatch... bottom part drops down... try getting anything bulky out of the cargo area... you can't get close enough to it.

Re: Overland or used X5

Hmmm...while I really enjoyed the BMWs I owned, they were a maintenance hassle even within the warranty period. I'm on my second WK2 (2013) Hemi and am closing in on 90,000 miles with no problems and looking to pass this on to charity and get another at the end of the year. So, you guessed it, I'd say do a new Grand Cherokee over a used X5, absolutely.

As a side note, I see many BMWs driving around on seriously hot days with their windows down and owners drenching in the humidity. When opportunity & curiosity got the best of me at gas stations I asked the owners "Why roll with the windows down in brutal heat and humidity?" Every response was that the AC was broken, it was out of warranty and they didn't have a spare $2000 laying around. Yes, avoid the used X5.
