Overland or used X5

Hi Guys,
Long time lurker, but first post.

I have narrowed down my SUV purchase between a new Overland with a Hemi, or a 2012/2013 X5 with 20k miles. They price out about them same. I love everything about them both, but my only concern is the repair and maint cost on the X5. I don't do any off-roading. I would appreciate any thoughts or opinions.

Re: Overland or used X5

I have always bought new cars. If both meet your needs and are equally comfortable, the new Jeep would be my choice.

Re: Overland or used X5

Overland period! I'd never consider a 20k 2 years old car for the same price!

Think about what the x5 offers that you don't get in the overland to be worth the same but having 20k/2 years... I can't think of anything!

Re: Overland or used X5

The X5 will eat you alive in maintenance once it goes out of warranty, so how long you intend to keep it should be a consideration also. I have several friends who are BMW people they like the cars a lot but their word is don't even think of owning them out of warranty. brothers 325 had 70k on it rear end went out recently for $2500 lol he dumped it. get the overland unless your somebody that the BMW logo means a lot.

Re: Overland or used X5

From my own personal experiences, I've never had that great of luck purchasing used 4x4's. It's even more of a crapshoot than buying a used car. You really have no idea how they've been driven or what's near to going out on them.

The only exception to that was the 77 Chevy Blazer that I bought used. I did a complete restoration on it and also dropped in a 454. Everything was rebuilt from the ground up. LOL... with the Muncie CH465 and NP205 behind it, that sucker was bulletproof.

Biggest plus of the x5 in my opinion will be dealership experience. Probably the only thing I miss about the luxury brands. Nice loaner cars, good looking ladies at the front desk , and never a wait. Never been to a jeep dealership that comes close.

But you'll be giving up a lot on your warranty for that. So cost of ownership on the x5 between maintenece and warranty will make it a much more expensive car. Even the tires and brakes are double the cost. And people always forget that. And since u seem to be price conscience I'd not get the x5. In fact get a 1 year old jeep with low mileage and take a vacation with what u save.

Re: Overland or used X5

I may be biased since I have had six GC's....but each time I consider getting a new vehicle I peruse what else is on the market. In my neck of the words, for SUV's it is Range Rovers and Porches Cayennes plus BMW and MB SUVs --- they are EVERYWHERE. The Jeep beats them all for features, price, just the right size, capability, etc. Every time I am in the market, the GC wins and I buy another one.

2 year old BMW vs. new Overland....you can't go wrong with a new Overland, especially with a Hemi!

Re: Overland or used X5

yep I agree with you on that but my guess is the 2015 GCs will be in the shop a little less than the 2014s but time will tell. Jeep dealers have got a long way to go with customer service but even so Ill deal with it and BMW can keep their latte with foam and Ill keep my money lol

I actually went through this same dilemma a few months ago before purchasing my GC Overland. Granted, there may be some bias on this board, but I was sold on being able to get so much standard for my money. Plus the fact you're getting something brand new vs. the unknown of used.

I compared the Overland vs. Certified Preowned X5s and Range Rover Sports (11/12 MY). The CPOs would give you a year or two of warranty, but after that you'd be on your own. I didn't like the idea of plunking down well over $40k and having to sweat out a costly repair early on in ownership. Plus with something brand new you get all the latest tech (and the new car smell).

It wasn't an easy decision, but I REALLY like the newest model design (on par with any high end SUV if you ask me) plus all the standard features on the Overland (same bells and whistles as the big dogs). In the end it was about choosing a better $$ decision over the flash of a Range or BMW.

Re: Overland or used X5

Faced same question as I love my 535i. We tested and I tried to to convince myself that the x5 would do what I wanted. After an extended test while the 535i was being serviced, we found that the interior space was adequate but it didn't feel like right. It was trying too hard to be a car and failed to be either a sports car or an SUV. Tested several Jeeps similarly and they all performed as expected and didn't have the same identity crisis.

We have been completely satisfied with the jeep. We started with an overland but after it was totaled shortly after purchase, we upgraded to a summit. Only things I have found not available on the jeep are the lane departure and night vision. While I like the night vision on my 535i, the active blind spot available on the jeep has been more than adequate.

Re: Overland or used X5

Thanks for all of the input. I am leaning towards the Jeep right now because I like buying new and the maintenance cost on the X5 scares me. The Jeep is pretty amazing to me that I would even be able to compare it to a luxury brand. I will drive them back to back this week and hopefully come to a decision. Funny thing is I am currently driving a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, so anything is an upgrade.

Re: Overland or used X5

There are two reasons someone sells a car with 20k... It doesn't go or it doesn't stop.

I've had horrible luck with used cars. I haven't bought one in 30 years and have no intentions of ever buying one again. I'd rather drive a brand new ford fiesta than a used Rolls Royce.
