I compared both stereos when buying and they are both fine, the HK does sound better overall (for 2k it better) but the Alpine sounds fine also there is nothing wrong with it. One thing i will say is that the source of your audio makes a big difference. Sirus xm sounds flat on either stereo its an over compressed signal not good sounding. If all you do is listen to xm then dont waste your money on HK because you likely wont hear much difference. The HK shines with a well recorded SD card or CD, bluetooth streaming sounds good also. Id recomend going to the dealer and listening to both for yourself, bring an SD with you dont make your comparison based on XM, unless thats the only thing you ever listen to anyway. Good luck

I can confirm that. All my music on my SD are .mp3-files at a rate of 320 - and generally, that sounds great. It's all coming from my own CDs and I have a huge mix of older and newer ones and it amazes me that there are huge differences in the quality of sound - although everything came from CDs at the same rate.

However, if you think about it, it just makes sense. After all, why should a CD recorded in 1988 sound as good as as a disc recorded 25 years later? Although the technology itself is still the same, the technological tools (microphones, computers etc.) have advanced so the sound is better as well.

Now, on the HK, this difference is significant. Hearing an older, dull track followed by a crisp and clear new recording - but as I said, all from SD at the same rate..

Unfortunately there isn't a single summit for sale in my state right now to test drive.

Exactly! Just because the music was recently recorded doesn't mean it's going to sound better than an older recording. Some of the remastered recordings from the 60's and 70's can easily outshine some of the artificial "new" stuff.

That's also true - it's just that the majority of my older discs are indeed old and not remastered.

Re: Overland vs summit

I was all set to buy an Overland last April when the sales guy was called away and left me for about 15 mins, just sitting in the vehicle. I started playing with the sound system, which I expected to be quite good, because I quite liked an Alpine system that I had owned in a previous vehicle. But by the time the sales rep got back, I was quite disappointed. I said something like "I guess no one buys a Jeep for the sound system", and he asked me if I had listened to the summit system. I then spent the next hour changing seats every few minutes between the summit and the overland, comparing the listening experience using the same source files on my iPhone. To my ears the difference wasn't subtle; the Summit system was stunningly better.

I hadn't even considered the Summit until then, but I ended up buying one. There were some cosmetic things that bothered me about the Summit, and I was torn about not having tow hooks, but I wanted that HK sound system!

I compared them also and i liked the HK and a few of the off road things not on summit bothered me also but after looking at it decided they were fairly easy add ons so just added them later.
