Paint Chip touch up

How do people here repair their paint chips. My 3 week old JGC got a nick on the front hood from a rock. Most of the roads I drive on now looks like they are seasonal roads since they threw a layer of rock onto the asphalt.

Is the paint pen better or the paint with the brush? Do I need to put a primer down? Should I sand it it? Looks like automotive touch up recommends clear coat too.

Thanks for any assistance.

Re: Paint Chip touch up

I have always used Dr Color Chip on my cars. They match the paint to your exact vehicle. If you can provide the color code that is the easiest or they can do it based on year/make/model. The kits work great for rock chips and they are easy to use.

Re: Paint Chip touch up

I picked up a paint pen directly from the Jeep dealer which also had a brush inside to paint with. When I asked the guy at the counter he said for a small chip not to worry about using a clear. I also didn't prime or sand and it's held up well so far.

This kit works INCREDIBLY well...touch up paint can't touch this stuff as far as filling and even-ness...if that's even a word...

Re: Paint Chip touch up

I used a primer (If it went to metal) and the paint pen/brush, both Mopar products. Then I wet sanded with 2500 grit.. Looks pretty good to me. Not perfect then again nothing will be else you strip the entire panel that is effected and have it refinished. My chip was the edge of a door, dime size almost, thanks wheelbarrow.

Re: Paint Chip touch up

Dr Chip looks easier to use and the before and after pics look really good. I guess I will get that for my JGC and also a kit for my wifes VW Jetta TDI

Re: Paint Chip touch up

After reading some more reviews I am a little hesitant to buy it now. Looking at some of the reviews it does not fill the chip but instead color it so its still noticeable.

Re: Paint Chip touch up

In a different thread on this forum, I explained how I scratched my 20 inch wheels on my Overland. The dealer said MOPAR doesn't make touch-up paint for the wheels. Has anyone bought, or know of, aluminum-colored touch up paint that I can use on my wheel?

Re: Paint Chip touch up

The Dr Color Chip kit works great if you have realistic expectations. Its not magic, its just touchup paint that is a mixture that is thin, so it goes in evenly. I personally no longer use the "smear and buff" part of the kit, I just use the paint.

Use a very small tool to apply, the kit comes with some great brushes and toothpick type applicators. Use a little, let it dry, use a little more, let it dry, until the paint is about even with the level of the surrounding paint.

Is it perfect? No. You'll still be able to see the chip from up close, but it will look 100% better and nobody else will be able to tell.

The only other option is what J13 suggested, repaint the whole panel.
