Just wondering if the new paint equipment they added to the Jefferson plant enabled Jeep to produce a vehicle with less noticeable orange peel?

From what I hear it is from the paint robots, since it is not color sanded between that coat and the clearcoat. Just a sacrifice that has to be made when not doing by hand.

It's a case of that final polishing that is not available to a mass production vehicle. If you saw a paint shop job, you would know what it really looks like prior to polishing. I find the paint jobs as they are delivered to be quite nice, and wonder how they are able to deliver the shine that they do considering they are applied by a robot.

Hello,
I used to paint custom cars and it is possible to paint without requiring a sand in between coats but it is highly variable depending on the area of the panel your painting. You must apply many passes over each area until the paint is thick enough so the surface tension can pull the irregularities out of the paint surface. This is extremely difficult where there are edges and creases that collect paint faster. You spend a split second too long on an area and it runs. The programming of a robot to have this kind of finesse is the difference between smooth and glossy and dull and orange peely. It’s far better to have a little orange peel than risk runs any day though.

I was near a Ferrari F430 up close yesterday and it had plenty of orange peel.
