Re: Pennzoil Ultra Platinum

Are you sure you aren't using a super-sized filter rather than the regular size?

Ours takes 7 quarts, and its a little high. After a drive (and letting the oil filter fill up all the way), its exactly at half way up the marks on the dip stick.

lol yes just the normal 899s. This is a known issue with the dip stick not reading correctly and a quart low after filling with 7 quarts on some of the 5.7s. There are extensive threads talking about it, one of the dealers even opened a star case on it

Re: Pennzoil Ultra Platinum

When I change mine I'm going strictly by the dipstick. It would be nice if the dipstick actually matched what the manual says. But if it doesn't I won't be upset. I mean really, you can't expect everything for almost $50K.

Itried that if i go by the dip stick mine needs 8 quarts to bring it to the full line not over the full line. If i do that it sill burn off a half quart until its at half way in the hashed area and then not use any more at all so that tells me something is probably wacked with the dip stick. 7.5 made sense i guess

Re: Pennzoil Ultra Platinum

Well now I don't know what to do? Mine shows full on the dipstick as it was delivered. So far no oil consumption, (625 miles). I have no idea how many quarts is in the damn thing. I'll check it tomorrow morning before I start it. Then I'll most likely have something else to worry about.

I would not worry the wacked dip stick isnt a problem on all just some it seems random. When you change it next time just put the required 7 quarts in and see where you are on the dip stick if its at full with 7 then you are all fine. My guess is 7 is correct on all of them as the manual says but for some reason some have either a dip stick the wrong length or the dip stick tube the wrong length. Still letting it sit on add a quart after adding 7 is a little unsettling.

$21??????? Wow, that's cheap. You sure it was the Ultra Platinum, in the dark bottle/jug? Was it a sale?

I'm not a conspiracy theorist at heart. But I can't help but think this isn't all but deliberate so they can, and most likely will, eliminate the dipstick entirely. Like BMW has, and Jeep and others have that use the ZF 8-Speed Transmission.

When they do they'll site "inaccuracy" as to the reason why. They've made reasonably accurate dipsticks since the invention of the automobile. Now, all of a sudden, they can't seem to make 2 the same. Because they are having issues making them all the same length?

You watch. Next you will not only be looking for a dipstick that isn't there any more, but you'll only be able to reset your oil change "meter" by a "professional" at the dealership. They won't do it unless they perform the oil change themselves. So it can be "certified". All of this revolves around the buck of course. The more simple maintenance they can take away from the do it yourselfer, or other service related businesses, the more of it there is for them. It won't be long before we're all looking at $175.00 oil changes. But of course they'll all be, "done professionally"...... By some zit faced 17 year old making a buck an hour above minimum

Re: Pennzoil Ultra Platinum

My Crossie can read the oil level on the dash, maybe that is the future.

BTW suspect if only a dealer could reset there would be a lawyer involved shortly & talk of "class action". Similar things have been tried before and never last.

When I did the first oil change (switching to full synthetic at 1000 miles) I followed the manual and put in 7 qts. The dipstick read low. I called my local auto repair shop owner (who is a big Mopar enthusiast) and he said the manual was wrong. Said he always puts in 7.5 qts when he changes the oil and filter in a customer's and his own V8.

Thanks. That makes me worry less if I have to put in more.
