Re: pentastar tick

Have been told that the replacement head is RL141353AC and word is going around that us is US (heads ? engine ?) made that are having the problem, not Mexican. Can anyone verify ?

Suspect there is going to be a lot of discussion in Vegas this week, hopefully some hard info will surface.

I have read that the 2012 Wranglers are having the problem, would this be the U.S engine / head?

Is the engine / head on the GC from Mexico?

Re: pentastar tick

Pentastar engines are made in US and Mexico (soon to be two places in US). Says which on the window sticker. Mine is Mexican.

The Wrangler engine has a different intake than the WK2 and a different axle ratio but problem seems to be on WK2 as well. Only real commonarilty is both weigh over 4,000 lbs.

Have made some SWAGs as to what is likely but if just a machining issue they would not need a redesigned head. What we need is for someone to compare a failed head to the replacement. I suspect the issue is with flow characteristics so if they moved the injector location it should be obvious significantly the change seems to be to the head and not the intake manifold.

Since I would estimate that 5-10% of the attendees will not be CJF employees and a significant proportion of the rest will make use of the refreshments, will be interesting to see what data comes out of Vegas.

Re: pentastar tick

All the Pentastars for the Wrangler are made at the Trenton MI plant. The WK2 has a mix from both plants, but it seems now that most are from the plant in Mexico. I know the complaints seem to be coming more from the Wrangler people. So I guess we would need to hear if anyone that has had the issue had an engine from the mexican plant. If the problem was a design issue both engines should be having the failure.

I don't think so it seems to be mostly late 2011's and 2012 models.

My build date was Jan 2012, Laredo hecho en Mexico. Had the head replaced at the beginning of Oct at 13k miles. Just got back from a long trip between Phoenix and So Cal when the CEL went off. Before the head replacement the drivers side sounded like a Diesel engine & afterwards like a purring kitten.

From what I gather from the wrangler forums a cylinder leak down test will confirm the issue with no CEL. If you have a OBD2 reader or dongle to connect to your computer look at the Service $06 menu for the misfires. After step 1 of reflashing from the stealership to resolve the issue (SOP from Chrysler) the engine still registered 60k misfires before the CEL came on the next day in cylinder #2.

Best thing you can do if you're concerned is to buy a OBD2 reader for you laptop and buy the Touchscan software. Once you contact your dealership if they give you any problems promptly open a case with Chrysler as well for them to cover your rental car costs. For me it look 3 trips to the dealership before it was fixed and I brought in the Chrysler press release & OBD2 report on the first visit.

Post cylinder head replacement I can tell you the jeep gas mileage & power went up so it's worth the wait.

Re: pentastar tick

If both US and Mexican engines (did you mean your engine was made in Mexico, AFAIK all GCs are assembled in Detroit) are havring the problem that sounds like a design issue and explains the new part number.

Now if someone could just let us know what the change was we would have a much better idea of what was the root cause. That CJF is keeping details close to their vest sounds like they are concerned about a potential recall.

BTW I can display misfire info on my cell phone.
