I cannot get over the amount of compliments I get on the WK2. I've had some nice cars in my life, cars costing far more than the Jeep, but I've never had the kind of reaction I've found with the Jeep. Total strangers at gas stations, the carwash. Just yesterday I took the Lexus to the carwash and then took the Jeep, I had 3 separate people come up and tell me how much they loved the Jeep, what a great vehicle it was and what a great color. You pull up to the same place in the Lexus...and nothing. Garage attendants, drive through window operators...bank tellers...just people on the street. This is a constant thing...not a week goes by that I don't get a compliment or my wife doesn't tell me she's gotten a compliment from a total stranger in the Jeep.
Jeep has always done a great job on making a luxury utility with the grands. They have definitely out done themselves with this model. I would put this right up there with my Range Rover in the luxury category.
No offense but all Japanese cars are just plain boring and average except for nissan/infiniti (which is out there for a Japanese brand).
The point of my post had nothing to do with my Lexus. For what its worth, I've owned Lexus vehicles for a long time and am a huge fan, whether they're your cup of tea or not...no reason to make what should be a positive thread, nasty and negative
The particular Lexus I have now is very commonplace, but my point is that we've owned other vehicles that are way flashier and more expensive than the Jeep and I've just never had a response to a vehicle like this before. Its not like they're rare around here either...you see them everywhere...there are 4 on my street alone including ours...
I can honestly say that this is by far one of the nicest vehicle's I've owned. It's looks, ride, handling and yes the amount of compliments I get are great. I've owned several really nice cars a 76 Olds 442, a 70' Olds 442, 69 Camaro Z28, 06 Chrysler 300c Hemi awd, and several (3) lifted and modded Wranglers. My current one being an 06 with a 4" Pro Comp lift and goodies and the GC has nudged itself to the top overall. I think the redesign with the Jeep heritage is something all manufacturer's wish to acheive but have fallen miserably short.
I agree with the comments above, I got a lot of compliments on the Overland, but after I put the tires on, it was like I couldn't get out of the jeep without someone being Right there like "now that's a jeep!". And even if that wasn't the case, I think still they are the most capable 4x4s on the road and off lol but they definitely have a stance that is all their own.
I have to agree on how good looking the WK2 Grand is regardless of price points. Heck, that's what made me go look at one to begin with! Even a base Laredo looks sharp and that is priced in the range of a lot of boring competitors with most not nearly as capable. To me the telltale sign that this vehicle is a hit is that so many teenagers notice it. Although, that notoriety makes me a bit nervous when I see teens checking it out in a parking lot when I walk out of a store.

No actually. I (we) turn our cars fairly often. As a result I often hear "now what are you driving?". I am often amazed the negative response whan I say "I got a Jeep"..until I usher them out, open the door, let 'em see the Summit interior and proclaim there is a Hemi under the hood.
From there the usual reaction is "I cannot believe what they have done with this thing, the old ones sucked.."
I am not making that up. If it happened once, it happened 10 times...
Hasn't happened with the WK2 yet, but it happens constantly with my new Audi A5. People go out of their way to tel me how much they like the looks of that car.
I think the WK2 is already too common around here. We have at least 10 of them just in my townhouse developement alone...
Thanks. One new (Audi) and one used (WK2). And I still have the 4Runner as well. Long story short, I bought the WK2 from my Aunt for a steal. She was going to get killed on a trade-in, so I offered her cash for it instead.
Well...here in NY people don't usually comment on anything less than a Diablo or restored MG-TF. Audi A8's and M cars are like popcorn. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting one. So the new Jeep MIGHT get a reaction because of the makeover. I used to get complements on my Subaru Tribeca with the 1st grill. It was downright odd and people really liked it.
I don't see many of the new Grand Cherokees here though and I'm on the road quite a bit.

I'm in NY and I have to say that while Audi isn't exactly a rare brand, the A5 is actually a somewhat rare vehicle. It's almost impossible to buy one off the lot because dealerships don't stock many of them. And if you want a manual trans A5 like mine, then you have to order it from Germany and wait for monhs until it arrives. It's rare for me to see another A5 on the road around here. The WK2 must be selling very well because I see tons of them. Maybe that's why my Audi gets so many compliments and my WK2 does not. They are both great looking vehicles though...
Here in Southern Ontario I wouldn't describe the Grand Cherokee as commonplace. Not yet anyway.
So yeah, I do catch admiring glances when I drive by on the highway.
Just today I caught caught a teenager in a rice rocket admiring my 20" wheels.
(of course at his height, thats all he could see. )
Haven't had anyone come up to me at like a gas station and ask about it.
I've only owned it since November, so maybe when the temps are in the PLUS degrees that will change.
In my opinion the A5 is one of The nicest designs currently available. The engine choices suck though. Too much car for the overworked 2.0. 3.2 is nice but no stick and the 4.2 stick is history. An S5 4.2 ragtop with a clutch is probably the neatest car they never built.
Yeah, I love the design of the car. It looks fantastic from any angle. But most of your info is either wrong or outdated when it comes to the engine/transmission choices.
First, the 2.0T isn't at all overworked. That engine makes 258 lb ft of torque from just 1500 RPM and it maintains that peak output all the way through 4200 RPM. The car actually feels a lot more powerful than it is because of the excellent low end torque output. It actually makes more low end torque than the 3.2 V6. In fact, even the 4.2 V8 has to be at ~3000 RPM before it matches the torque output of the 2.0T. Sure, the V8 is more powerful and makes the car faster, but the 2.0T can easily match the V8 output with nothing but a bolt-on KO4 turbo upgrade and a tune. I'm not bothering to do that with my A5, simply because it's more than fast enough for me as it is right now. The car has effortless acceleration and excellent passing power on the highway. I don't even bother shifting out of 6th gear to pass on the highway. It's such a great engine and I normally get 32 mpg without even trying (but mostly highway driving).
Secondly, the 3.2 V6 has been discontinued in the A5 for a couple of years now. The only engine choice (in the US market) for an A5 is the 2.0T. When the 3.2 was available, it did come with a stick. I know a guy who has one.
And finally, the 4.2 V8 in the S5 still comes with a stick. There are no plans at all to stop offering stick in US models. And BTW, starting next year, the 4.2 V8 is dead in these cars. It will be replaced with the supercharged 3.0 V6, which is the same engine that they've already been putting in the convertible S5 models.
Here's my A5 after a quick wash on a warm winter day here in NY. You can also see my 4Runner in the garage...
i have had my overland for just over a week but i haven't taken it out much. went by the bank today to deposit a check and right as i pulled up, and before i could even press the call button, the guy inside was all "well that must be brand new!!" and i go "yeah, i got it a week ago." he told me how great it looked - more than once. i was actually surprised that he could tell it was new but i did just have it detailed not even an hour ago so it still looked pristine.
so then i moved the QL down to entry mode because i couldn't reach that thing that you put your checks in (before it sucks them away). and he bursts in over the intercom: "OMG I just saw it settle!!!" and i laugh and say, "well, no it didn't settle, i put it into park mode". you could tell he was blown away. so then i show him all the other modes and he's totally impressed and was talking about how nice he had heard the new JGC were. seriously, the guy could not stop talking about how amazing my overland was (all this occurred over the intercom at the drive-thru). it was awesome as a new jeep owner to get that kind of love from a stranger.
i have had a few compliments from mates about it. All my mates are into big proper 4WDs and do a lot of 4WDing and Rock crawling, and most where a bit worried when i said i was buying a Jeep. Once they actually saw it and went for a drive they where quite impressed. Obviously not a big rock crawling 4wd but still a nice 4wd with some big diesel balls
