Agreed. I am also one of the "problem" people, but I'm taking a chance on another. If you look at TrueDelta (great site), the odds of getting a Jeep lemon are no greater than most other brands. For the 2012 Grand Cherokee (latest year available), it was three per 100 vehicles. Some vehicles (Acura, Honda, etc.) are less than one per 100, but there are plenty of brands that are around 2-3 per 100. That seems to be in line with what we're seeing here.

The "newness" of this vehicle and the new electrical system is probably raising that a bit, at least at first, as in my case a bad ground I think fried a whole bunch of other things. If they had checked that when I got the vehicle, I don't think it would be a lemon right now, but who knows.

In any case, I'm trying to keep an open mind yes, and there are many people here who are out enjoying their 2014's with no issues or just minor ones that will be corrected with software updates down the road.

Cheers.

I would say this is a very wise position to take. If you DON'T HAVE to buy a new vehicle right now, I'd wait a month or two at least. We didn't have a choice as someone ran a red light and we hit them at 50mph and needed something immediately as they were uninsured and my insurance wasn't going to help pay for a rental anymore.

I'm sure they will get these issues under control. I'm sure Chrysler is being overwhelmed with in-the-field info right now. If you could wait until August, no matter how much the heart wants it, I would say wait. By then, I would hope a lot of these issues were resolved.

But that's just me.

Re: Perspective on 2014 GC problems

I'm heading out on another road trip this weekend, the forth since I got my '14 JGC. I've said it before, knock on wood, mine has been trouble free. I rarely take it out of eco mode, and find that the driveability gets better all the time. There are software updates I'm sure are coming down the road that will address minor glitches in the electronics and tranny behavior. That being said, the only thing in life that is certain, is uncertainty. Will something break on my Jeep? I'm sure someday it will happen. But if you wait for perfection, or a sure thing, that's what you will be doing....waiting. Maybe it's a function of my age, but more and more I believe "nothing ventured, nothing gained". I also thought about waiting until the '14 JGC had a longer track record to draw on, but I'm glad I didn't. I traded in a perfectly good Buick Enclave with 28k miles on it. I'm a retired factory worker living on a decent pension and Social Security, so I'm not exactly rolling in money, but time is finite, and change and variety are the spice of life. So to anyone on the fence, I say go for it if that's what you want. The clock never quits ticking. The JGC's latest iteration is a really fun to drive vehicle.

LOL..It was my Uncles new Buick Enclave that started this whole car search business with us last year. As nice as it is, it was not for us. Our time frame is short because the present "Lex-eye" is long in the tooth, covered in warts and we are not putting any more $$$ into it. Not waiting on perfection as Lord knows I drive a pickup. But a damn fine one a that..

Re: Perspective on 2014 GC problems

I have a few problems, but nothing that has left me stranded. Jeep is slow to come up with solutions, and it seems they give dealers different solutions for the same problem ... but the parts they say should be changed haven't shown up yet. My first trip, to and around Long Island went without a hitch. So, having problems show up later was disappointing. For that reason, the poll that was mentioned might not tell the whole picture.

That said, I have been enjoying the Jeep a lot more than I ever enjoyed my MDX, which is a pretty decent vehicle. I did 112 miles round trip today, including some driving on the beach. The Jeep was great on and off road. I averaged 22.2 MPG, before somebody asks.

My real concern has been what to do if I break down on the beach. A friend of mine gave me the solution. He said to always park below the high water mark. If it breaks down there, wait 12 hours to be safe, order a new car, then call the insurance company.

If that happened, I would probably order the exact same Jeep.

Re: Perspective on 2014 GC problems

I was lucky enough to get one of the first ones that were delivered to the dealers and I wouldn't change anything. We picked it up March 2 and it now has over 3500 miles including a couple 300 mile trips. I had a troubled '96 XJ that ONLY had 190,000 miles on it when I traded it in for a truck. That dependability led me back to Jeep along with being able to customize it so easily. It's a fun vehicle to customize. I haven't had issues with the UConnect that pressing mute hasn't solved, power, locks, tailgate, etc. The only issue I had, which I think was self inflicted, was with the lower control arms but dealer fixed it with no questions.

The transmission is a little rough in the beginning and lags in ECO mode, but after a while, those disappear. I find myself shifting between sports mode and drive depending on the situation and often leaving it in sports mode which is a ton of fun to drive in. My wife (I call her Earnhardt) loves to drive it in sports mode and the V6 does well with the hills of WV and city driving in Louisville.

I feel for those who have problems. I work in manufacturing QC, so I know that 100% perfection will never happen and it's not even the goal for most companies. But for me, walking up to it and having someone ask me about it or compliment it still makes me smile.

Re: Perspective on 2014 GC problems

I'm at almost 4K miles on my '14 Limited, which was an early build (built 2/19/13), with no problems at all except a temperature display that's always inaccurate. I'll take it to the dealership eventually for that, but maybe not until just before the warranty runs out. I love the power of the Hemi, and I've not noticed any problems with the 8-speed tranny - in fact, I really like it. Gas mileage is poor, but A.) I knew that about the Hemi when I ordered it; and B.) I didn't care then and don't care now. I've been on one 1,500 mile trip in it; it is without a doubt the quietest and most comfortable vehicle on the highway I've ever owned.

I'm with other comments about driving what you like and want - life's too short and if you pass on the GC no one can guarantee you that "better" car you'd buy wouldn't be a lemon.

Don't know if it's true with other brands as well, but a fellow Saab owner once told me, "always leave one thing broken," especially if it's something minor. Not sure why, it was some superstitious thing. Like better one small thing be broken than a big thing.

Having had more than my fair share of both great and awful service department experiences, do you have any suggestions on how one can predict ahead of time what kind of relationship you're going to have? I'm not so sure this can be foreseen. I could be wrong.

Only 2 things I know of that are big signs. First one you need to be able to read people and that is that they are genuine ... they need to understand your needs, listen to you and care that you are being looked after. Sometimes this is hard to read but after talking to the same sales/service person a few times, you will know if they give a crap.

The second thing is rising to the challenge. Even if you need to create a situation like changing you mind on something and pretending that was always what you wanted. Dealing with adversity is a huge indicator. I had my wheel fall off on one of my cars right after a service visit and you know what.... I remembered that there are still humans and mechanical tools involved here and someone or something screwed up. So it wasn't about the wheel it was about how they responded to the issue.

Truth is many times you won't know for sure until you have a few encounters but always give the dealer the option to make it up to you if there is a problem. If they fail at that then move on but never immediately say "I am never going back there because I had this big problem once" well OK the dealer has no reason to help you because you aren't coming back anyway right?

Grandfather always said "you want to be successful? Surround yourself with good people you can trust". If you can't trust your dealer find another one (baring you live 2 hours North of Anchorage that is).

Was I concerned before mine came in, somewhat yes. Reading the stories of peoples problems, yes they concern me. Have I had any real issues (other than a few reboots of the 8.4an), nope. I was worried when I went to Chicago the 1st weekend we had it but with no problems, I have no worries anymore. Just have the dealer make sure the TSB's are preformed before you get it and you should be good. Things happen and sometimes it is of no control of anyone but they do need to stand by their product when it comes to warranty. I hope I never have to use it but if I do, I hope all goes well.

Should you be worried, it all depends on how you look at things. Sure a little worried but if it all goes well then enjoy the vehicle.
Sno, what is TSB`S..... trying to get my pre-delivery list together....man i`m so pumped up, Milous`s tracking is so exciting!!!!
