Pick up Overland this week or place an order

I have found the Overland I want at a dealership in my area. Black, 4x4 Hemi, light frost, 430n. I can pick it up this week. However, my concern is with the Nav system. I am a loyal iPhone user and very concerned with the compatibilty issues I have read about on this forum. The question is: should I pick up the Overland now with the 430n, or place an order for the new 730n (RHR) and wait it out? I have no interest in any of the Sirius features.

Also, can you voice control the songs loaded on the hard drive of the 430n?

Re: Pick up Overland this week or place an order

I am interested in the answer to this also. I have used BT music streaming in my wife's Ford Edge and it works great with her Sync system. But when I test drove a WK2 and tried this feature it was a trainwreck.

I'm not sure I've seen anyone say that all the iPhone connectivity issues are resolved with the 730n so ordering and waiting for that may address your concern. (My approach for music will be to jam the HD full of songs and create some playlists. Audio quality will be much better than with BT, and if/when the voice command and other issues are resolved, that'll just be gravy.)

The bigger issue will be connectivity for phone calls. At least with the HD, I won't feel like I'm settling for a workaround to listen to my music. But it will be very disappointing to have to continue using a BT headset in a vehicle that is supposed to interface seamlessly with my phone. Hopefully this will be a temporary nuisance.

Back to your question: By all measures, you are very fortunate to have found an Overland in stock that you like. Lots of folks here have spoken highly of the 430n. I would probably take the bird in the hand and purchase this vehicle. Seems like a fairly safe expectation that a future firmware upgrade will eventually address the connectivity issues with the 430n. Jeep seems to be taking all reasonable steps to ensure that early adopters are happy with their buying decision. Good luck!

Re: Pick up Overland this week or place an order

Thanks for the reply. Milous did confirm that the new RHR is iPhone4 compatible in a previous thread. He also stated the current RER will be getting a software fix (see below), but did not mention a fix for the 430n.

Help is on the way

I will be posting this new info today on the WKJeeps.com navigation radio page:

Changelog (partial) for update v2.400 RER/REW/REP (to be released January 2011):
Bug fixes:
iPhone4 compatibility issues
Intermittent no sound from audio system when using remote start
Radio lock up when using U-Connect
Repeated "acquiring signal" message when in satellite radio mode

Patches to both the 430N RHB and the 730N RER are forthcoming in order to help the units be compatible with Apple's nonstandard Bluetooth implementation. Even then, it's only an issue for now if you have the iPhone 4.

If you like the one on the dealer lot, take it.

Just this weekend I picked up an Overland with the 430N. I have no issues with bluetooth phones calls on both my iPhone 4 (iOS 4.2.1) and my wife's 3GS (4.2.1 also). Pairing was a snap. I've voice dialed many names via uConnect without any issues.

Both phones have some issues streaming music via bluetooth. Their either play fast, play normal, or don't play. I haven't experimented enough to figure out what is causing the play speed issue.

The 3GS plays fine via the USB connection in the arm rest. The iPhone 4 doesn't play via USB. I haven't tried the USB on the actual headunit.

I'm patiently waiting for an update that fixes the bluetooth music streaming. Otherwise is works great.

May I ask where you heard that a patch for the 430n was on the way? This would be great news and make my decision much easier.

Does anyone know if the songs on the 430n hard drive can be voice controlled?

I tried to find the thread, but couldn't. There is an update coming to the RHB to enable the Sirius Travel Link, and it's possible I conflated that with the coming RER update to improve connectivity, but I'd expect any update to the RHB to improve connectivity as well. Several people have reported success with the RHB/iPhone 4 combination for phone use (for Bluetooth streaming and USB connection, not so much).

As for voice control of songs on the hard drive, I am not sure. It should do it for an iPod connected via USB in the console, but I'm not sure about the hard drive (which isn't implemented all that well anyway).
