Driving to work today, I saw a GC across the intersection. I immediately noticed the new LED headlights, they really really really jump out at you, and look awesome! I slowed down and watched the GC turn into a hotel parking lot. At lunch I decided that i'd venture over to the hotel and see if it was still there.....

I live in Denver Colorado and work out near the airport. Over the past 2 months I have seen about 6-12 GC's covered in the black and white camo and parked in various hotel parking lots near my office and noticed a few on the road. All had traditional headlights and grills, until today.

When I drove into the parking lot I saw 4-5 Grands, two of which had the new headlights, tail lights, front and rear body parts, etc. Here are the pics, including pictures of the 3.0L CRD Engine. There were guys working on the jeeps, so I didn't get too invasive.

There is one picture of a rim, but I assume that this is just a testing rim. Looked good though.

What hotel is this?!?! Looks like something on Tower Rd... I work off of south tower, near I-70.... are you telling me there is 2014 CRDs closeby!!?!?

Also, are you sure it was Black? Looks like Max Steel to me. Did you talk to the guys and see what the deal was? Or just snuck a few pictures? I totally would have walked over and got all up in their shit, lol.

Very perceptive!! I don't know how you figured out the area but you are close! 40th and Lewiston. There's a Hyatt Place across Lewiston from Jimmy Johns. They were parked at the Hyatt, I bet they will be there tomorrow.

Tried talking to the guy but he was not chatty and didn't speak the best English! Go see if you can get him to open up!

It's all on you now James! See if you can get them to divulge why the CRD has a late release if they've been using it elsewhere for a long time now. Problems getting it to work with U.S. specs? What problems are they there in Colorado trying to work out?

Yes! I drove by on the way to work and there was probably 5 or 6 of them... I came back at lunch with my camera, but there was only 2 in the lot then. I snapped some photos: neither had the LED lights... I wasn't able to get a front shot of the second one.

I'll head back after work and see if the other ones are back and get some more photos of those. I am really puzzled what these are doing here.... this area is no where near the mountains where I assume they could be doing testing... and these appear to be old pilots... maybe one of the guys could chime in?

Of the limited words that I got from one of the testers, was that they were testing them at altitude and in the mountains. They had the black 2014 limited hooked up to a big Uhaul trailer this morning.
Sounds like they are definitely doing some testing then, probably with the diesels -- towing testing as well. Not sure why they are at that location though -- all the way across town from the mountains where the real altitude is.

I wonder if these are Jeep people or maybe its MEDIA testing/review?

I frequently visit Mt. Evans and I have seen several car manufacturers testing their vehicles on their roads. Perhaps, altitude testing? I mean... you can literally drive to 14130 feet on that road. I have seen VW Tuaregs, Ford Escapes, Jaguars, BMWs, etc usually in a group of 4-5 in full camo on that road.

A friend of mine's dad used to work for Jeep back in the days and his dad was part of the testing team. Apparently, they actually take these Jeeps off-road to test their capabilities. Perhaps, these test vehicles were doing exactly that by looking at the dirt and mud on them.

Cheers,
-A

Yep. I was up there while in CO for a wedding. Unfortunately, in a rented cage and not on my bike. Anyway, we saw a couple test units from a motorcycle company. Likely BMW and their new water cooled boxer. Couldn't pull the camera out fast enough. The weather changes at the drop of a hat, too. It started snowing in July at the summit. Daughterkid and me in front of a drift still melting (for reference, I am 6'1").

It is very common for manufacturers to test their future builds at altitude. When Ford released their new scorpion diesel for the pickups, they apparently didn't do enough testing at high altitude. The result.... A popular diesel truck magazine tested the Ford against the Chevy and Dodge and they noted quite a few issues at high altitude with the Ford. Ford had to quickly release a programming update to fix the problems.
